Hi list!
I am a newbe to linux and speakup, but I wil n jpin another list, besides, you can answer everything.
Anyway, I don't see the point about speakup beeing command based.
Having to edit this to get that, windows screenreaders are more usable, even if the don't have a very complicated installationAnd also, what is the CVS version of speakup.
Is it aspecialy devoted to the pharmecy?

The main trouble with windows screenreaders is that they only work in
windows.

Ameer,

Speakup is command line based because Linux is cammond line based. While
you can run X, developing a screen reader for it is a lot bigger job and
the other Kirk (awsome programmer Kirk) chose to tackle the command line
version.

The truth is that while the graphical interface makes things easier for
some people, it has come with a high price for many others. I am not
convinced it has to be this way, but to not be this way would require
considering alternate access from the begining. The fact is that Windows
screen readers have cobbled access to the operating system. Microsoft
breaks them on a regular basis without warning (or regard) to the
companies making them.

They do have to be graphical, but have a menu like dos screen readers to

Hi:

The main reason why speakup doesn't have a nice little menu interface for
changing stuff is mainly because linux users generally are used to changing
config files and stuff.  Though there is the speakup-config script which
I've not meddled with that is supposed to make this stuff more
friendly.  Building it into speakup itself is of course impractical as the
program has to fit into the kernel and this would make it unnecessarily
big.
