one way to do this would be to install one of the standard kernel-images
available with apt, and then configure lilo to boot with it using an alias.

I think there actually was/is a way to allow emacspeak to have one console
and speakup the rest with doubletalk (not the synth under discussion here)
and I think the way of doing this was actually posted a long time ago. but
I don't think this was possible with most synths.

Hi. I remember it too. I thought it was done with an emacspeak server
patched to talk through speakup instead of the Kernel Double talk
driver.

in a previous post, I've explained how this can be achieved.
the thing is I think from memory, speakup grabs the serial port and even
when you kill speakup on a particular console, it don't release it.
if I'm wrong, then I wasn't helpfull.

Hi. I'm not much of an emacs user, but emacspeak will give you a better
presentation of some documents than speakup and emacs will. For
example, emacspeak with the DECtalk software uses different voice for
different print type while reading some documents. Reading the fame
file with just emacs and speakup won't.

what you need to do is 2 things.
1.
make the device /dev/synth with mknod /dev/synth -c 10 25
then rewrite the speech servers which are tcl scripts to make use of
/dev/synth.
that's all ther is to it.
