Hi. I'll try and break this down into as simple terms as possible.
1. we will assume your Linux system is on some sort of network weather it is
home based, or one at a company.
As such it should have a network card in it which is known to work with Red
Hat out of the box. I know of Linksys and Realtech cards which are vary good
for telnet style installs.
2. You would insert the Red Hat cdrom and at the boot prompt you would tell
it something like:
linux text telnet
3. Assuming your box can get a broadcast address, and the nic is compatible
you can go to another computer on the network, and bring up a telnet cliant,
and specify the address of the RH box.
If you are in Linux speakup, and the Linux telnet client works great.
However, if the other box has windows then I suggest using terraterm Pro and
something like Jaws or Window Eyes to read the setup prompts.
4. If your telnet client connects ok to the box with RH installation, and
then it should come up on your screen, and you can use the remote box to
read the install prompts.
If you don'
If you don't have at least two computers on some sort of network and then
the telnet install won't work for you. Same is true if you connected two
computers via the serial ports. If you don't have two computers you won't be
able to do the install.
Then, your only options is to try a kickstart installation, or get sighted
help.

But how can I get the address of the RH box? I am on a home network where
the RH box would be 192.168.0.2. But I had to configure that address.
Does the RH installation CD allow me to configure this before install?

Ping the broadcast address of your network. An example of how to do this on Linux is:
ifcfg eth0
There are many other ways to get this information, of course. Once you know the broadcast address used on your network, you can ping it. On Red Hat type
systems, do:
ping -b [address]
On Debian, do:
ping [address]
Example:
ping -b 192.168.100.255
You might want to limit this, so you don't get flooded with too much data on screen:
Example:
ping -c 4 -b 192.168.100.255
says "ping the broadcast address 4 times."
On each of those four pings, you'll get a response from each machine that's listening on that address--every machine on the network. It's your job, at
that point, to know which one is the new one that wasn't there before. That's the address you telnet to.

I do actually have a DVD/CD-RW combo drive. Are the network drivers I
need accessable from the CD-ROM? What steps would I take to load these
extra drivers from the CD-ROM without having to use a boot floppy or
driver floppy?

If you can boot from this drive, then you can install using telnet. You would use the same command, though I believe you don't specify 'dd' to indicate a second disk.
So, it should just be:
text telnet
and you're off to an installation.
Beware, though. I'm speculating about the steps and extrapolating from my experience with floppy boots. I would expect you will not get a prompt for a second
floppy--that wouldn't make sense. But, I do expect you'll get that screen where you need to tab once before pressing enter. I'm sorry, I didn't document what that
screen was. I had no sighted assistance around. I just guessed it might be something like that and tried it. Until that step, the box did not show up on my lan.

This is basically correct, but there are some gotchyas. I will not claim to know them all, and maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's very straight forward with a
single disk.
I used two disks, perhaps because there's now a disk of network drivers separate from the boot floppy, and I didn't take the time to figure out whether
some net drivers were in the boot floppy.
Of course, there's no speech when you boot the first floppy, so these gotchya's are important.
At the first pause of disk spinning I typed:
text dd telnet
That says "I want a text installation," " I have a second driver disk I want to use," and "I want to install using telnet"
You could, of course, put this in the syslinux.cfg file using any editor, even m$ notepad.
The disk will spin for a long time. when it stoped, I put the second disk in. I press enter twice.
The second disk spins for awhile, and here's the gotchya:
tab once then press enter.
Now, you can go to the second machine, discover the dhcp address of the machine on which you're installing Linux, and telnet to it.

Hi, if you have a personal networkyou can put the RH cd in the drive start
up, and do a:
linux text telnet
At the boot prompt.
Assuming your nic is supported it will grab a ip from the dhcp server, and
you will have to ping around and find the ip it has taken.
Then, with the other box you can telnet to the box, and read the setup.

I have installed RH9 a couple of times using telnet. Thomas' instructions are essentially correct, but ping the broadcast address to see what address dhcp assigned.
It seems strange, but you do get exactly the same screens that you get with a text installation. Of course, you can't switch consoles.

I never got around to having the time to install and try out redhat, but why would that be strange? For all intents and purpose\s, it's as if you were sitting at the machine, and running speakup.

It's just my own personal reaction, probably based on the fact that most of my telnet experience was command line oriented. Of course I use apps like mutt all the time
over ssh, and I know, intellectually, that it's no different. But telnet takes me back, way back, to the days of logging into an ISP like Netcom from a DOS box.

You have three choices, as I see it:
1.) Use sighted assistance to read the screen
2.) Create a kick start file and do a kickstart installation;
3.) Wait and hope Bill can figure out how to make bootable installation floppies with Speakup in the kernel;
I think that about sums it up. I suspect these are also ranked in order of dificulty! <grin>

Kickstart installations are detailed in Red Hat's Customization Guide. All the Red Hat guides are available online at:

These guides are an outstanding source of information about Red Hat, and about Linux in general. You will not exhaust them.
I note there are several new guides released for Red Hat 9, which is a good thing indeed.
Please note that kickstart installations are not covered by the Installation Guide. Consider that a warning that performing a successful kickstart installation is not
trivial, especially for the beginner.

Hmm. Interesting question. How easy would it be to rebuild the RH9 iso
for the first bootable CD to include speakup in the kernel package and
boot image before upgrading? This may be a way to fix our problem if we
have the time, and if we don't have a second box or a network of some kind
to do it any other way. Just wondering how easy this method would
actually be to try.

I neglected to mention that Bill has posted rpms of the latest Red Hat 9 kernel, 2.4.20-9, patched with Speakup. So, if you can get RH installed, at least you won't
have to patch and compile a kernel to get your installation talking. Additional support is under investigation.
Let's put it this way, the Speakup Modified Red Hat Distribution is back, sort of. See:
