I don't have Verizon DSL, most of the routers have Web-based configuration
tools or better yet, you can telnet into the box and configure it via a
standard TTY line. You'll get a menu of options for setting authenitication
type, you can run diagnostics, etc. At least this is the case for the
FT100E I have connected to this box along with another Nic for my Lan.

If you want docs for the mode, you'll need to go to the modem manufacture's
site. I haven't used dsl, so I wouldn't know. My cable connection was
pretty easy, just plug in the modem to the cable line and to the nic on the
pc or the router and let dhcp do the rest.
Explorer has caused a general protection fault in module kernel32.dll. I'm

Hi,
I'm using Verizon DSL. They use PPPOE. The cd has, among other
things, a PPPOE client called WinPoet, with an installation wizard
thing. On the Windows side, I use a much simpler client called
RASPPPOE. On the Linux side, I use Roaring Penguin's PPPOE client.
It works fine with the Westel modem that Verizon provides.

For those people who use Windows 2000 and SBC DSL, RASPOE works way better
than the crap on the supplied CD...

Buddy,
Don't quote me, but when I looked into dsl about 2 years ago they were
using dhcp and good old tcpip. I think pppoe is used more on cable
circuits. Of course Verizon could have gone with pppoe, but what you do
is call them up, tell them you want a level 2 technician, and you will
not accept anything less. The front-line techs no little if anything and
are more human call screening devices.
If you run into a real roadblock, let me know and I'll see what I can
find out. Our Telcom guys have plenty of contacts with Verizon techs so
I'm sure I might reach someone if necessary.
good luck

Actually, it's the other way around. DSL is starting to use PPPOE more
and more, while cable is generally sticking with DHCP. I think PPPOE is
becoming popular because you have to have a username and password, plus it
probably at one time detoured Linux use. I'm finding a lot of web sites
and services seem to go out of their way to make sure you can only access
them using Windows with Internet Explorer. Thanks Microsoft for
abbolishing standards and making your own. So much for portability. I
think it's obvious that Microsoft wants there not only to be no
competition, but they want to rewrite all the RFCs to their
specifications.

Ah, when I checked into Verizon and some other providers tcpip was still
the "standard" or so they insisted. I assume this means this is where
everyone wants to go. I wonder if this means Microslop pays them
kickbacks.<grin>
Well at least my ISP plans to stick with tcpip. The of course have to
support winblows in order to support the masses which is what generates
cash, but they also openly support open source and Linux for sure.

I'm getting around this problem with my provider by going with their dsl
router option, only costs an additional $20 and then I don't have to worry
what's being used at the wall, just plug in my RJ45 cable, and off we go.
Cheers.

From the way it looks, yes it would be PPPOE and you will need their
software to 'dial' to their server. I suggest investing on a router,
unless there is a way to dial with linux...

I am using a Lincsys router as well, and I am using PPPOE. I have three
computers using the router. One of them uses DOS and Lynx for browsing.
the Lynx browser uses DHCP while the login uses PPPOE. Dual function. You
have to love it.

Kernels 2.4.18 and later have goot pppoa support and support a number of
dsl modems.

verizon.net does use pppoe, I know I'm still failing to connect to their
service. Also, set your mtu to 1492 not 1500 and keep it there or
verizon.net will break down your link in about a month and charge to
rebuild it. Anything over 1492 may be more than you're entitled to have
in band width. I wouldn't even sign up with verizon.net until I have
verified all my equipment works on my end including ethernet card and for
that reason I suggest you ask for the test account password and if you
can't get linux up and running with verizon.net call them up and get an
r.m.a. letter and return all equipment and terminate your dsl account with
them. One of verizon.net's problems is they don't support linux and it
took them time to research their own windows software just to find out
about that mtu setting for me. The assumption is everybody uses windows
so we don't need to know any of the settings since windows will create
their account for them and log them in for the first time. It took
verizon.net a month to send me my account login information because I use
linux.

I've been running verizon dsl on a linux box for two months without any
problems. Initially, I installed their software on a windows box to
register my account. Once that was done I connected my boxes to a router
which eliminated the need for their software on the windows box and for
PPPOE on the linux box.
If you take a look at the DSL-HOWTO their is a section dedicated to
configuring various ISPs. As I recall there is a link to a page dedicated
to setting up PPPOE for verizon.
Verizon has recently changed their smtp server to require LOGIN
authentication for sending mail. I was successfully able to build the
required sasl library and rebuild sendmail to allow it to authenticate
itself to the verizon smtp server.

What elements of the lib did you have to change? Did you have to make

First, you need to build the sasl library cyrus-sasl-1.5.28.tar.gz
Once you untar the package you can look at the index.html file in the doc
directory. The system admin link gives a basic description of the
authentication mechanisms and how to build the library. For my purposes I
build only the PLAIN and LOGIN mechanisms because I didn't need the others.
Once you've built the library you will need to recompile sendmail to
include code to access the sasl library. On that same index.html page,
there is link to Sendmail FAQ which is a nice discussion of how to build
and test sendmail. Remember that verizon is using the LOGIN mechanism, so
that's the one you'll want to enable when you build your sendmail.cf file.
I've compiled sendmail-8.11.4. So If you're using the same version I
could send along the binary.

Hi there. I was just asking bc I thought you meant that you had to edit
one f the C files in order to get it working, and then applied the diffs.
