First, you need to build the sasl library cyrus-sasl-1.5.28.tar.gz
Once you untar the package you can look at the index.html file in the doc
directory. The system admin link gives a basic description of the
authentication mechanisms and how to build the library. For my purposes I
build only the PLAIN and LOGIN mechanisms because I didn't need the others.
Once you've built the library you will need to recompile sendmail to
include code to access the sasl library. On that same index.html page,
there is link to Sendmail FAQ which is a nice discussion of how to build
and test sendmail. Remember that verizon is using the LOGIN mechanism, so
that's the one you'll want to enable when you build your sendmail.cf file.
I've compiled sendmail-8.11.4. So If you're using the same version I
could send along the binary.
Chris
