Hi all.
Wanting to use my modem's speaker phone ability more and more, and
being annoyed by the fact that I'm only able to locate speaker phone
applications that run under x, I decided to write a very simple, and
down to earth bash script speaker phone, which will take command line
arguments, and use the chat program, calling the appropriate chat
script.
However, I'm running into a minor problem. How do I redirect stdin and
stdout to /dev/modem, instead of having them tied to the tty, when I
run chat? When pppd runs chat before it establishes the ppp link, it
is already set to do i/o to the modem, so this isn't an issue for
pppd. If someone has suggestions on how to do this, please
share. Thanks.
Greg

Don't know much about chat, but try something like this:
programname < /dev/modem > /dev/modem 2>&1

Already tried that. If just sending a single command like atdt for
example, chat comes back right away, and the modem doesn't go off
hook. If using a script that is a send/expect sequence, chat just
hangs there until I kill it. The modem works perfectly fine in minicom
though. So, I suspect I'll need to use a c/c++ program to initialize
and setup the serial port, and pass it to chat to talk to the modem
that way. I'll need to think some more on what the best approach for
the whole program would be.

Hey Greg, you ever think of reading the man page to learn about chat?

Yes, I have. Would you like to show me which section of it says that chat
communicates directly with a serial port, instead of stdin and stdout,
or that there is an option which allows me to tell it that it should
talk to a serial port? Better yet, have you tried running a chat
script yourself after reading the man page, and discovered that chat
thinks that your console's stdin and stdout is a modem?
