I just tried running Espeak with Speech-dispatcher 0.6 and the latest speechd-up
from CVS. I am having a strange problem when doing this. For some reason, the
synth sometimes lapses into spelling entire streams of output and whenever I
redraw the screen it seems to always spell the first couple of letters on the
first line of the screen. Even more strangely, this doesn't occur on my laptop
with a newly installed Espeak. The laptop is running an older version of
speech-dispatcher and speechd-up. Speech-dispatcher is 0.5 and speechd-up is
0.1. The desktop speech-dispatcher is 0.6 and speechd-up is also showing 0.1.
It should be noted that I am using the exact same speechd.conf file for both
systems and my Espeak module config file is the same on both also. Any help
with this problem is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lorenzo

Hi Lorenzo,
could you please switch on log-level 5 in Speech Dispatcher
(/etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf, LogLevel), debugging
mode in the output module
(/etc/speech-dispatcher/modules/espeak-generic.conf, Debug)
and run speechd-up with
killall speechd-up
speechd-up -l 5
and send me the three log files from Dispatcher, the module
and speechd-up after reproducing the bug? They do all appear
in /var/log/ by default. See Dispatcher manual for more details.
This way I can look at the exact comunication between the components
and I can say which of them produces the bahavior you described.
If it is speechd-up, Dispatcher, the generic module or your
configuration script.
Please send the files privately to hanke at brailcom dot org, not to
this mailing list, as they can be rather big.
Thank you,
Hynek Hanke

Have you disabled "Prempt the Big Kernel Lock" in the kernel
configuration?

"preempt the big kernel lock" is actually not disabled here. But as far
as I know it isn't disabled on my laptop either, and I don't have the
speech-dispatcher problem there. The configuration files for both
kernels were taken directly from the Debian linux-image-2.6-686 and
linux-image-2.6-k7 packages. The k7 is the desktop and the 686 is the
laptop. I can try disabling this option to see if that helps.
Thanks,
Lorenzo

Thanks for the tip. Disabling "preempt the big kernel lock" worked. I
now realize why it worked on the laptop and not the desktop. My lapotp
is running kernel 2.6.12 which has no preempt functions. It works
perfectly on both systems now. Bug fixed.
Thanks,
Lorenzo
