The old reliable  bc works fine for me.

You might also want to try python itself, though it might seem a tad odd to use a major scripting tool as a simple calculator.

Also emacs has a pretty decent and powerful calculator.  While in any
buffer, just type,
m-x calculator
where the m-x is emac's way of saying esc folowed by x or alt-x may
often do it.

I use apcalc (the actual command when using it is calc). You can type 
"calc" and work within the program, or just type for example:
calc 21+58=74+63
and be given the answer and returned to your normal prompt. I mainly use 
it for simple math, but it lookslike it has a lot of features I've never 
used.
