alsa question

Hi listers. I have my sound card module loaded from /lib/modules/2.4.18/misc, which is where my alsa modules are located. In /dev/snd, I have pcmC0D0C, and pcmC0D0P. To make sure the card worked, I did the following: cat english.au /dev/snd/pcmC0D0C. All I got was a resounding beeping from the pc speaker, no audio. Can I not use cat to send audio to the sound card so it will play it? Or would it be better to use wavplay to do audio testing? Thanks in advance!

You cannot use cat to send audio files to devices. Instead use "play filename.au". You could use aplay too, but I still can't get aplay or arecord to work.

Hi Greg. Then that's a major mistake in the alsa sound howto! Unless they just wanted readers to test whether or not binary code was being sent to the device? But that doesn't make sense. Besides the fact that the howto refers to an old version of the drivers. Also, what is the difference between /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c, and /dev/snd/pcmC0D0P? I know what the c0 and d0 mean, but what are the c and p for in the two device files?

Hmmm, I do believe that it is suggested in the sound howto that you can
use cat to throw a .wav file at /dev/audio to test the sound card, and it
has worked for me, after all, you're just feeding it a stream of data.
Now an mp3 on the other hand...Just don't do it. *grin*

I have the latest Debian alsa packages installed and am running a 2.6 kernel.  I
have the following section in my /etc/asound.conf, which is the sample that
ships with the libasound2 library:

# Make OSS apps default to using dmix plugin too
pcm.dsp0 {
        type plug
        slave.pcm "dmix"
}

This makes me think that through alsa's oss emulation, anything that writes to
/dev/dsp0 should be able to use dmix.  However, this is not the case.  Is there
something else I need to do to make this section work the way it appears it
should?  Does this section not even do what it appears to do?  Do I have to use
aoss, since using it would seem to make the above section of my asound.conf
unnecessary and the configuration would seem to make aoss unnecessary?

Since oss only supports one sound source at a time, alsa can't fix that
behavior by emmulating what oss does and how it behaves.

That wouldn't be logical now, would it?

I don't think so. On soundcards able to play multiple streams at once, it's
possible to open /dev/dsp multiple times even with OSS. So if the emulation is
done correctly, and it operates over dmix, it should be possible to open
/dev/dsp by more applications.

Actually I've read in some dmix how-to this is supposed to work.

But I'm also a little puzzled with the magic of /etc/asound.conf and with what
it's supposed to contain to make dmix and oss emulation work (and the last step,
make them work together).

I would recommend asking on alsa-users@alsa-project.org.

You can play multiple streams with oss.  On my ens1370 soundcard with oss, I
could play music form the internet and run flite at the same time.  Whereas this
is not possable using my ens 1371 soundcard with alsa.

I have had exactly the oposite experience with the same or at least a
similar card. I have made it play multiple streams using alsa and the
dmix plugin, but was getting loads of /dev/dsp is busy type messages
with oss. What was your magic touch?

No idea.  The only thing is it seems that flite has poorer sound quality on my
ens 1370 where it and other sounds can play.  It's a different kernel a 2.4
kernel.What version of alsa usis the dmix plugin?  I'd like to get mutiplt
streams working on that system as it is a lot faster and flite friendly.

I've got a slackware 10.1 system, running a custom-built 2.6.12.3
kernel. This kernel version comes with alsa-drivers 1.0.9rc2, which,
if I'm not mistaken is later then plain 1.0.9. So, I've upgraded to
alsa-lib and alsa-utils 1.0.9rc2, all built from source, and grabbed
from alsa-project.org. However, I don't see any
documentation on dmix in the alsa-lib and alsa-utils source trees, and
I still can't play multiple sources through my sound card, which is a
via82xx card.

Can someone please either point me to documentation somewhere
describing how to get dmix working, or can someone please tell me what
to do to get it working? Of course, if I'm wrong, and 1.0.9 is earlier
then 1.0.9rc2, then I'll have to either wait for a newer kernel
version to come out, or just grab the latest drivers, lib, and utils,
and build all from source, disabling the sound options in the kernel
config. Thanks in advance for any help.

The RC in alsa file names stands for "Release Candidate." Typically,
there are a few such release candidates issued prior to the release of a
new version of some alsa technology.

I don't recall precisely when dmix was introduced as a default
technology in alsa-1.0.9, but you're using a pre-release version if
you're on RC2. In fact, they went to RC4 before release, as I recall.

The technology you're looking for is called dmix, and it's not well
documented, as so much in alsa is not well documented. It should create
a file called .asoundrc in your $HOME.

I hope this is enough to google with. I'm sorry I don't have a more
precise pointer for you.

Thanks Janina. Yes, I know that rc stands for release
candidate. However, it was my understanding, that if you have version
1.0 of a program, and you want to release for example release
candidate 1 of the next version, your release candidate would be
called 1.0rc1, not 2.0rc1.

alsa question

hi there,
whenever I try to turn the capture off for my mic and the capture
options with either alsamixer or amixer,
I find I can't turn my mic capture off nore once I've turned my capture
off can I turn it back on.
this is proving to be a right royal pain as I'm working on a shell
script to enable someone doing live streaming to be able to do voice
overs announcements and back announcements with a minimum of fuss.
basically, all the user need do is type ./vo s in order to talk and ./vo
m in order to mute the mic and continue playing their music.
if anyone has found similar problems please let me know how you've
managed to overcome them.

To start with, I am using RC6 of the ALSA stuff in case it makes a
difference.  I have to use the words cap and nocap to turn capture on
and off respectively.  I know, the docs and limitted help messages say
"capture".  I learned that little bit when talking to Gene here on the
reflector one day a while back.  That has worked well for me.  Also,
note that if the device 'Mix' is captured, you can then have all your
input chanels available for recording/streaming (that is, if you
actually want that).  The Mix capture does prove interesting.  When
chosen, the various *OUTPUT* volume and muting controls do affect what
goes into that mixer chanel.  That's quite different from using the
capture volumes on the previously captured device.

Hi all,

Well, I've finally done it, I'm running Linux. Install  was much 
easier than I expected.
Thanks to everyone who tried helping me to get my braille lite m20 to 
work with speakup a couple years ago. Turns out all I needed was a real 
synth and this doubletalk does the trick.

Anyway, I've got a question about alsa.
I have  a via8233 onboard sound card and am running alsa 0.9.0rc8d.
By the way, I think I remember someone here saying they had this same 
card and was getting several errors. I had the same problem with rc6 but 
apparently it was fixed in 7 or 8 because the modules compiled and 
loaded fine this time.

Anyway, could someone please explain how to use one of the mixer control 
programs? I have a basic understanding of alsamixer but can't seem to 
get it set right. With most things I try to play, there is a great deal 
of static interference. With some it's just enough to be quite 
annoying, other times you can barely hear the sound over all the static.
While some of the channel names like mic and CD are obvious, I have no 
clue about many of the others or how they should be set.
Could the cause of the problem be bad mixer settings, or am I totally on 
the wrong track?
