Hello everyone,
My name is Alonzo. I'm from Texas and attend TexasA.M in Corpus
Christi. I am currently using Fc9 and am new to linux. I'm not totally
new, but I'm just barely getting back into linux after using four it
years ago.
My computer is anAMD64 with a gig of ram. I have installed the 32 bit
version of Fedora with speakup motified. I'm wanting to use speakup, but
just had a few questions before I do so.
I Also have a laptop running ubuntu. So if it would be easier to convert
my laptop to Fedora, then I can do that as well. I just need input.
My questions are the following for fedora:
1. When using the speakup connector, for ttsynth, I just coppy the make
file into /usr/local/bin/
then creat an alias to start speak up.
2. When I edit the file grub.conf I beleive it's in /boot. To specify
the software speech at boot do I just scroll to the end of the file and
type speakup_synth=sftsynth then restart the computer and hope to have
speech at boot time?
questions not related to speakup:
1 When using the graphical end of Fedora in Gnome, I'm unable to hear
sound and speech at the same time. That is, if I play try listening to
an mp3, I would have to kill speech before hearing music. I tried
following the instructions to get espeak to work along side orca on the
wiki page, but it does not work. please advise on that as well.

Hello, regarding your bootloader question: You'll need to specify the synth in the kernel line, I believe. As for sound, have you installed the alsa driver for your card? either you've got a multi channel or alsa is not correctly configured--I had to replace the soundcard in my system a few days ago in order to get media and other sounds. Hello Tylor, I am able to hear sound in fc9 and orca. I have an hp a1022n desktop. So the sound card is built in. I have an external sound card, but that's not currently installed in my computer. The main thing here is I'm trying to get speakup working with ttsynth and be able to listen to music when reading documents with Orca. I enjoy listening to music while reading materials for school. Currently this can't be accomplished since I lose speech when trying to play audio at the same time. I either lose speech, or have to kill speech befor hearing an mp3 file using totem movie player. Alternatively if this is available in speakup by default with ttsynth, then that will do. I believe alsa is install or else I would not be able to hear orca or music with out speech. No, this only makes the speakup's output available to software speech, but you need speechd-up to actually make use of this output and deliver it to a software speech synthesizer through Speech Dispatcher. You'll see a line that starts title, then possibly root then one starting with kernel. Something like this: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.26-fc9-i386-spk root=LABEL=/ Put a space after that line then add any kernel parameters such as speakup's. Check the documentation that you have the correct arguement. Hello Janina, I've looked at hte new files you've posted. The only file I found regarding ttsynth and speakup was spk-connect-ttsynth-1.1.tar.gz I downloded the file and found hte same results. I'm unable to go through the make process. You mention that if hte make process does not work, for me to build my own binary. I'm not exactly sure how to do this. So if there is a website explaining how to use .c files then I would like to take al ook at it to familiarize myself with these types of files. I get the same erros, make error1. It complains that htere is no value for pitch, rait, memberHandle, and a hundred other errors. Sorry for being quite new at this types of things. I used linux a long time ago, but have forgotten lot's of what has to be done. I enjoy learning though and using the operating system. It's a .gz file. That means it's compressed. It's also a binary file--no make, or anything of the kind required. 1.) use the gzip command to uncompress the file: gzip spk-connect-ttsynth-1.1.tar.gz 2.) This will give you spk-connect-ttsynth. Copy (or move) that file somewhere where it can be executed from anywhere. /usr/local/bin is the recommended place. 3.) If you've properly loaded Speakup's software speech support, you simply execute the spk-connect-ttsynth binary to get speech. NOTE: How to tell whether you've properly set Speakup up depends on what version you're running. If you're up to date do: cat /sys/module/speakup/parameters/synth You should get one word, 'soft' as output. I don't know how I can make this simpler. I'm sorry. Hello Janina I'm sorry if it seems like I'm completely new. I've done the folowing and found the binary you put up on tsynth.com. I've edited the file specified menu.lst and my kernel line now looks like this kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.10-86.spk.fc9.i686 ro root=UUID=f78d3f62-f05a-4dab-a0f6-299adf756710 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.25.10-86.spk.fc9.i686.img speakup.synth=soft I'm not sure if hte last part concerning speakup is correct since I'm not sure what version of speakup I have. I've downloaded the latest speakup from a mirror using git. I'm jsut not sure if I should follow the commands specified to rebuild for my kernel or how i go about patchign my kernel since speakup is already installed. I understand that i need speech-dispatcher and speachd-up in order to hear software speech when using speakup. However, on that part, I can't install speechd-up since I'm not successful in getting speech-dispatcher to work on Fedora. I can install it from source and install the necessary libraries, but when trying to test by envoking spd-say hello the following error occurs: spd-say hello I get the following spd-say error while loading shared libraries libspeechd.so.2 can not open shared object file no such file or directory So I can't continue with speechd-up if speech-dispatcher is not working. Hello, I forgot to add that I've also linked the file this way I can just type spt at the command prompt. The spk-connector is put into /usr/local/bin as recommended by the readme.
