Hi all,
I've just successfully setup a ppp link over a null-modem with my 2 machines.
The HOWTO recommends starting te connection at 38400 baud.
However theese are modern machines (a 100 MHz 486, and a 600 MHz pentium III) both with 16550a uarts.
I was wondering if I could go at 115200 instead?
Can I go even faster?
Thanks for any help in advance.
Greg

Wo. Hold on here. As far as I know serial ports and serial connections only
can support up to 38400 BPS, and that has nothing to do with processor
speed, but hardware speed of the serial devices.
Sure modems themselves support 115200, but going from machine to machine I
believe 38400 is max over serial ports. If someone knows any different let
us know, because it would be a nice thing to know.

Standard modern serial ports can handle 115200 quite nicely. There is
no reason to keep your ppp connections when direct to 38400. You will
want to make sure you are using hardware handshaking though.

After posting my message,
I did some experimenting starting at 460800 baud.
I ended up having to drop down to 115200, and the machines comunicate fine there (they're not too slow either, I'm surprised with the transfer speeds).
