Hi Listers,
I am having a great difficulty getting fedora 6 to boot up with speech using
the double talk external.
I have tried the dvd the boot iso and the rescue iso. I can get the fedora
3 boot iso to run but the fedora 6 never comes up with speech.
here is the command that I am issuing
text speakup_synth=ltlk

Let's confirm that you downloaded your iso images from
SpeakupModified.Org? Is that correct?

usually necessary, but sometimes it is. There are examples in the
Installation HOWTO.

Yes I did download the images from SpeakupModified.Org I tried it again
with the ser=0 1 2 with no success thanks.

Are you certain your serial port is on the motherboard, and not on a PCI
card? Speakup will only check for ttyS0 through ttyS3, and often a PCI
card with a serial connector will avoid those addresses and use
something like ttyS4 instead. Speakup will not work with such a
card-based serial port.

Hi people, it might be worth reinforcing your comments about having
to specify the serial port. I have a Dectalk multivoice (dectalk
external) and although speech starts when the dvd is booted with the
correct syntax, I had to go into grub.conf and manually add the
serial port on the command line, so as the system will start speaking
from the installation.

I don't quite understand. Can you say more? There is no grub.conf in the
installation media, rather an isolinux.cfg. Is that what you mean? If
so, how did you specify your serial port there?

My girl friend was here and here is what she saw on the screen
Timer: vector=0x31 apic1=0 Pin1=0 apic2=-1 Pin2=-1
MP-BIOS bug: 8254 Timer not connected to Io-APIC
Trying to set up timer (IRQ0) Through The 8259A.Failed
Trying to set up timer as Virtual Wire IRQ.Failed
Trying to set up timer as ExtINT IRQ. Failed :( .
Kernel Panic- not syncing: IO- Apic + timer doesn't work! Boot with
apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option.

Your system is choking before it gets to anything to
do with speech. The APIC is a programmable interrupt
controller. Thats the 8259A in your system. The 8254
mentioned is the system timer. It appears that on boot
the kernel is trying to register the system timer with
the interrupt controller and it's failing.
Note what the kernel message states: try booting with
the 'noapic' option. This is a kernel parameter. They
can be specified at the boot prompt.
Suggestion 1:
text speakup_synth=ltlk noapic
Suggestion 2:
Get your girlfriend to boot into BIOS and disable ACPI
in the BIOS, save and exit, and boot again.
I'm betting that your system uses nvidia nforce on the
system chipset. You are not alone with this APIC error.

No sorry, I just meant that I can boot off of the dvd without having
to specify the serial port, so could perform the install, but had to
manually edit the grub.conf file on the HD once installation had
finished, so as the serial port was specified in the kernel boot
line. I suggest that the system looks for the Decext, but since the
synth is old and tired, it is not picked up when the serial ports are probed.

I had my girlfriend go and disable apic but now the doubletalk will not
speak and I have tried the following things.
1. text speakup_synth=ltlk speakup_ser=1 and I tried 0 and 2
It boots fine from the fedora 3 boot.iso any help would be appreciated.

The specific messages you posted the other day are your best bet to get
solid advice. Anything else is just wild guesswork which I doubt we'll
even try to do. For instance, I don't think anyone would have guessed
apic, and clearly it was getting in your way. I know it's a pain to have
to pull that kind of data together for an email posting, but it's the
only way.

Hi but I don't get kind of error message the installation starts just with
out speech.
The doubletalk works fine with the fc3 boot iso so I don't understand what
is happening.

The specific messages you posted the other day are your best bet to get
solid advice. Anything else is just wild guesswork which I doubt we'll even
try to do. For instance, I don't think anyone would have guessed apic, and
clearly it was getting in your way. I know it's a pain to have to pull that
kind of data together for an email posting, but it's the only way.

You'll need to get someone, perhaps your girlfriend again, to look.
FC3 is a completely different kernel with different everything. It
doesn't pertain. All that proves is that your synthesizer is working as
specified on the boot line. Something else about your hardware is
apparently hosing your boot before Speakup has a chance ot load.

Okay, if disabling apic stops doubletalk, then did you
try the other suggestion instead of getting someone to
disable ACPI in BIOS settings?
One of the things that ACPI does is dynamic assignment
of interrupts (IRQs). Those kernel messages showed
failures while trying to do that dynamic IRQ assignment.
Disabling ACPI will tell the kernel to assign interrupts
the old fashioned way, like before ACPI was available.
If that doesn't work then are there any other specific
error messages? Does the system proceed to install
and just not speak, or what exactly is happening?

It is difficult to know exactly what the problem is from that stack
dump, but it shows that speakup is executing speakup_dev_init.
I still believe that speakup is not the problem, instead there is
something not right about the device it is trying to access.
It is important to focus on the device and think in the most basic
terms like: what device will it use? I mean is it a /dev/tty port?
If so, is there setserial commands being executed on boot to
configure the port? At this point, it would be desirable to test
that port by some other means as simply as possible. Do you
have two computers available? Would it be possible to attach
a null modem cable between the serial port of the problematic
machine and another machine with a terminal program running
to make sure the serial port works?
Do you know the name of the port that would be used such as
/dev/ttyS0 and if so, what happens if you use the command
setserial /dev/ttyS0
I realize that some if not most of this type of testing may not
be possible without speech working, but until it can be shown
that the port works, trying to debug from the application end
is meaningless, given the types of errors you are getting.
Back to the most fundamental basics: what exactly is attached
to the computer to do the speech? Is it a doubletalk lite, and
is it plugged into a serial port? How can you verify that the
port works when booting with that kernel?

If you do have a second computer available, may I suggest it may be
easier to install Fedora 6 using telnet and figure out later about
getting the Doubletalk talking. You would also have the option of
software speech once Fedora is installed, so it should be easier to
debug the Doubletalk issue. And, you'll have Speakup's clipboard for
cutting and pasting this kind of system output.

Note there is an error in this guidance. ksdevice would be specified
something like:
ksdevice=eth0
or better still with a mac address something like:
