Hello to all on the list,
I've tryed to install speakup on a number of computers, and finally got a working installation of Debian. So now that I have the comp-uter system up and running, I naturally have a number of questions. The first and most important is I have a radio station that I wish to get up and running on the internet, I wish to use linux as the operating system for my automation machine, as it is a lot more stable then windows. I've heard of PRS to run radio stations, but I have been told that it's not free first of all, and secondly, I've been told that it's extremely system intensive. Is there any station software out there that is accessible, free, and not too resource intensive that I could use to run a small radio station? If more discussion is required, you can e-mail me privately off list at
cschulte@stonecoldrock.com
thanks a lot,
Chris Schulte

Hmm. You could use Muse, available from http://muse.dyne.org. There a few quirks though...Like the Ncurses interface doesn't work, you need to use the command line. And you also need to be
broadcasting to an Icecast/Shoutcast server...All Muse is is a streamer that sends data to either type of server.

Ok, but does this allow for multiple files? What I mean is can I set up a
play list to run for example fourty-eight hours while there was no live
programming? Just how accessible is it?

No...That's the thing you can't do that. What I do is I do my broadcasts from all live input. Whether it be the microphone, or MPlayer.

You can use ices2 and icecast2 both of which are debian packages and
allow automated playlists. You can check out
http://linux-speakup.org:9000/egoplay.ogg for an example. There also many other options for streamers and the like.

Well, Kirk, how large is this .ogg file? I am grabbing it from a shell acount
in lynx--and so far it is more than 76mb and counting at 16kb a second. I was
going to say half kiddingly, maybe these bytes will continue to add up until we
finally get a Democrat in the Whitehouse again.

Umm, it's an audio stream. It will go on forever.

Ok, so is this just for ogg files, or can I set up mp3 files on this. I
like the stream by the way, it's got a good sound. I'm also looking at
streaming in mp3pro, will this work with that?

don't know, you'll have to read the mp3pro docs to find that out. I
believe ices2 will stream mp3 also but I don't know why anyone would
want to.
