Hi all. I got it working. Apparently I needed a space bwteeen the > sign
and the filename.
OK, so I've now got my synth speaking relatively the way I want it. How do
I make these settings take hold as early as possible? The earlier in the
boot process, the better. TIA!

John, depending on the distro you use,
try putting settings in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file reflecting those of
the speech settings you'd like.

Hi, just add the commands to your rc.local file.
Then, Speakup will come up with the same rate, pitch, etc.

I have found it useful to duplicate those initialization commands;
I have them in my rc.local file, but I have also placed them in
/etc/profile. I have found that sometimes when the speech device
is already talking when rc.local is executed, the initialization
commands will not be recognized. So the second placement in
/etc/profile is a kind of insurance policy.
