* Install hangs at first boot @ Jon Dowd ` Janina Sajka ` Kerry Hoath 0 siblings, 2 replies; 8+ messages in thread From: Jon Dowd @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup Hi List, I've downloaded and burned 2 sets of the RedHat 7.3 iso's and am having trouble installing either of them (the results are same regardless of media used). The installation seemingly proceeds fine until the first boot, at which time the system will hang at the point where the message is displayed "OK Now booting the kernel". The perplexing issue for me is that these discs have installed successfully on two computers, but failed on three others. The package choices are identical in all cases, as are all the choices during the install. The failures have occurred on a Pentium 4, with two 30gig HDDs, failed on a Pentium 3 with a 10gig and a 30gig HDD, failed on a Pentium 60MHz with a 1gig HDD, succeeded on a K6 500 and a K6 550. * Revisiting Install hangs at first boot ` Janina Sajka ` Jon Dowd @ ` Jon Dowd ` Jon Dowd ` Scott Howell 1 sibling, 2 replies; 8+ messages in thread From: Jon Dowd @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup The error has returned. The fact that it booted once was a fluke, won't boot. Here's what happens : Once the computer is turned on, after the POST, the RedHat GUI for LILO is displayed. Two choices are offered; DOS and linux, the latter being default. Ten seconds pass the GUI disappears and in the upper left of the screen the following is displayed : "Loading linux....................." followed immediately with a new line : "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel." a cursor will appear and blink, under the U and that's it. No sound from the synth. No error message regarding kernel panic, just that. Dead halt, will stay with those two lines showing for hours, until I reboot and then the same. As I mentioned in my earlier post, this has happened on three computers I have installed using the RedHat 7.3 discs from the link at linux-speakup.org) all of which have Intel Pentium processors. I have had the system work on two other computers, using the same discs, the exact same choices during the install, one difference being AMD processors. On the two computers I have succeeded with I have the ltlk synth talking, doing PPP using wvdail on an external USR 56k modem. Any ideas? Are there other symptoms, etc. I need to mention? Thanks, ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janina Sajka" <janina@afb.net> To: <speakup@braille.uwo.ca> Sent: Monday, July 29, 2002 11:24 AM Subject: Re: Install hangs at first boot > John: > > We can't help you if you don't tell us what the error is. Same results. Using the boot floppy created during the install provides the same results. I have used "Autopartition" and set up the two drives like this : /dev/hda hda1 20gig FAT32 /dev/hdb hdb1 /boot 50MB hdb2 / 24500MB hdb3 swap 500MB I have tried placing the boot loader in the mbr of hda and I have tried placing the boot loader in the other choice. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon Dowd" <jondowd@mind.net> To: <speakup@braille.uwo.ca> Sent: Monday, July 29, 2002 10:30 PM Subject: Revisiting Install hangs at first boot > The error has returned. * Re: Revisiting Install hangs at first boot ` Revisiting " Jon Dowd ` Jon Dowd @ ` Scott Howell 1 sibling, 0 replies; 8+ messages in thread From: Scott Howell @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup I've seen this "uncompressing kernel image" message before. I'm sitting here trying to recall what the problem is. A few suggestions that come to mind is first make sure lilo knows exactly where your kernel image lives, make sure it is in the first 8gb as suggested to you, make sure if you either downloaded the kernel or compiled it that you in fact have compiled it for the correct processor although it should boot regardless even if behaves incorrectly, make sure again you go over the liloconf file carefully and note where everything is because its possible lilo can't find the image, oh and also you might check to see that there is a line that says something like, Support LBA for large hard disks. # lba32 and beyond that, begin running in circles, scream, and then attack the problem again. good luck Scott ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 8+ messages in thread
* Re: Install hangs at first boot Install hangs at first boot Jon Dowd ` Janina Sajka @ ` Kerry Hoath 1 sibling, 0 replies; 8+ messages in thread From: Kerry Hoath @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: speakup I found that on one machine; lilo worked where grub did not. I did not chase the problem down further although I should at some stage. Note that any boot partition should be in the first 8.4gb of the primary drive; there are bioses that claim to support >8.4gb extentions but don't correctly; so boots beyond 8.4gb fail mysteriously. If these machines are only r unning Linux; make sure grub/lilo are installed int he mbr; otherwise they should be installed in the first partiton boot sector of the linux primary partition. By the way; does making a boot disk for t he machines work during hte install? I found if I made a boot disk; the hard drive failed to boot so I used the boot disk. I then fixed lilo after the system was booted. Regards, Kerry. Try checking the force lba32 option on the boot loader configuration screen during install. I had this problem on several of my drives, and checking force lba32 during install fixed it. That is on the same screen that you put in the lines to have speakup come up talking on startup. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 8+ messages in thread
