Maybe this time???

Marc Mulcahy <Marc.Mulcahy@Sun.COM>

Hi All,

One of the biggest challenges in screen reading technology is
providing a consistent user experience across multiple applications
which may use objects in different ways, and to allow quick access to
information which may not be easily accessible through an
application's keyboard navigation commands. I have created a project
written in C and Python to explore these issues, and to provide a test
bed for playing with possible solutions. The project is in CVS
module orca.

This came through just fine on the second try, I don't see why
everyone is making such a big fuss about it, or maybe we still have
people on here who don't bother reading their email all the way through,
and just rattle off whatever they want, regardless of what else maybe
in their inboxes.

I got the email for the second time it's just not terribly informative. Doesn't
really explain and doesn't tell us where to checkout this module from.

I suppose if you don't know what the GNOME CVS repository is then you don't know where.

Try ftp.gnome.org if you're curious.

Hi Sean
This seems to be a test project to implement something like what you can do
with JAWS scripting. I am not yet sure whether it works with Gnopernicus or
not, but a look so far makes me think that it doesnt yet.

It might replace gnopernicus.

I don't think so. It would probably require a lot of scripting to implement
the same mouse navigation and other screen review functions in the scripts.

However, there may also be an option of allowing orca to work with
Gnopernicus, in that it uses Gnopernicus to take care of speech and
braille, rather than directly using gnome-speech and BrlAPI.

Hi, Luke:

Well, it will speak directly via gnome-speech. And, it is capable of getting accessible data via AT-SPI.

I don't know about mouse functions, but I tend to try and avoid those. Just a personal quirk.

If that's the case, then I think Orca is the better of the two. JAWS has a
lot of grunt for that sort of think, and if Orca can do the same...It'll
rule!
