Hi folks, I haven't been able to find out why this happens so any helps would be appreciated. I try to use the alt-1-2-3 keys to switch consoles both as root and as my user account however it won't move from tty 1, I really want to run multiple tasks but <shrugs>. Any ideas? and thanks for all the help with the speakup keyboard mapping stuff and dhcp, reinstalled the kernel and that is good and dhcp sometimes works with is good enough for now:)

Once you've logged in and switch between logged in tasks it's not necessary to hit return hater switching screens. Your default when you power up is alt-f1. Something else, you don't need to use alt-f2 to move to screen 2 if you don't want to. If I press return when I change to a console with a log in prompt, the system will then prompt me for the password. Debian takes the return at a log in prompt is an empty user name. Instead of pressing return when changing to a console, I use either keypad dot to get cursor position and console number or use keypad 8 to read the current line. My system doesn't hav a ctty command. Where can I get this? I have to use either the alt function keys or the alt-left and alt-right arrows to change consoles. It does not show up in slackware either but I did have it working in redhat earlier and read about it in 2 cent tips on the linuxgazette page in an early issue. There may be other equivalents in both systems, would be nice for scripts and will search man pages for tty programs and see what if anything shows up over here.. When I boot up, I move through all six VC's logging in without pressing return first. In fact, I have set habits about it, e.g. every odd numbered console is a janina login, every even numbered one is a root login, console F1 is mail, etc., etc. So, the problem is that this is boring. Is there a way to cause the system to come up with these consoles already logged in and open? Yes, one can get fast at logging in, but why do it unless necessary? PS: On my desktops I no longer shutdown, so this isn't much of an issue. But, I'm not sure where you get it as a tarball. With RH, the RH installer just put it in. And, with Debian, I just used apt-get. So, don't know what to tell you other than try Google. If someone gets physical access to your machine, they could do anything, abosultely anything, and you'd have no way to trace it, except that things had happened that you hadn't instigated. Personally I'd be very wary of doing such a thing. I'm certainly not for writing passwords in the clear, so unless expect can manage them encrypted, that won't work either, just for that security reason. Granted it's a little tricky because there's no configure script so you have to move and edit the makefile by hand, but the main config file is easy enough to follow imho.
