Hi all.
I just got from a friend one of those things that you can put an ide
drive into, and hook it up to the usb port. He gave me a hard drive
too.
I enabled in the kernel usb section the 2 different choices that there
are for an atapi to usb bridge, and loaded the usb-storage module.
It tells me though after I turn on the usb hard drive thing that the
product and vendor id is not claimed by any active driver.
My /proc/bus/usb/devices is below.

Not sure about that specific drive, but it will most likely work. The thing
I can say is that you need to be sure you have the ide-scsi module loaded or
that scsi emulation is in the kernel.

I have ide-scsi in the kernel. In fact, I am using it for both my
cd-writer and cd-rom drives. So, what do I do to get the usb drive
recognized? Naturally, I can't tell ide-scsi to look for that drive in
lilo.conf, because the usb sub system would need to be loaded
first. Thanks.

Do the following:
1. Turn off your machine.
2. Connect the drive to the computer and ensure it is powered on.
3. Power on the machine.
4. Log on to the machine as root.
5. If you have the USB drivers compiled in to the kernel, skip this step. If
not, issue this command.
modprobe usbstorage
(the name of the module may be usb-storage not usbstorage, I can't remember)
6. Issue this command:
dmesg > messages.txt
Now, mail the messages.txt file to me so that I can review the kernel
messages. You should send this to me privately so as not to clog the list
with it. My address is at the bottom of this message.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot, and let you know how it goes. I did
some searching on google, and there seem to be 2 groups of people out
there; those for whom it works, and those for whom it doesn't, with no
apparent cause for either situation.
