To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.

Last night and this afternoon, I tried to install FC6 via the Internet. I
used the rescue CD for booting. I used
www.speakupmodified.org
for the site
and cdroms.html for the directory. I went through the partitioning process,
choosing the boot loader, selecting dhcp, and setting the root password.
Then, I got this message:

Error

Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata
directory. Please ensure that your install treee has been correctly
generated. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository:
anaconda-base-200612160229.i386

Abort

I have also tried installing from a partition on the hard drive. With the
CD iso images, I got the missing package problem I got with the CD's I used
last week. (I forget which package, but I doubt it matters.) I've tried
using the DVD iso image, as well as the dd command output from it; in both
instances, I was told that the CD images could not be found. (I guess the
rescue CD wants a only CD images, at least on a hard drive.)

I have looked at both the FC6 installation guide and the FC3 on for us
Speakup folks. I saw nothing in either place indicating anything wrong I
may have done. I do not yet have a usb drive or flash device. Anyway, as
always, I'll appreciate any help. If somebody knows there's no help to be
had (knows, not merely supposes), I'll appreciate knowing that, though of
course I won't like it. Thanks!

Al

p.s. I'm sorry if this shows up twice, but I got a bounce message alleging that my earlier one was sent to too may recipients.

Albert, thanks much information you provided has provided as many useful
answers as you could possibly provide. The cmos header information may
provide you with some more useful information. If you get a Linux
installed or try again with some form of fc6 speakup disks maybe try using
acpi=force as one of the boot parameters. It could be an old acpi is
being blocked from running by default and acpi=force will clear that and
maybe give fc6 a little more information. Perhaps using lapic as another
boot parameter may improve a few things too. As an alternative apm=on
might be tried to substitute for acpi=force in boot parameters. If a
system does install you may be able to read cmos information at the top of
/var/logs/dmesg and if the cmos information has something else to say
other than intel I'll not be surprised. My cmos information identifies
this machine as a Dell. You could get the name of the computer store
where you bought the machine but I don't know.

I'm curious about two things and should maybe be curious about more. For
anyone else having installation problems with this distribution, what
company made your computer and what model is the computer? The second
thing I'm curious about is are you using any kind of drive sled which
turns your hard drive into a removeable hard drive? The last check I ran
using sha1sum -c SHA1SUM only complained that it couldn't find the dvd
image and said all other files were okay. I could sacrafice myself and
download the dvd image too and do the checks again and then try another
burn and install. I'll try a burn and install before I do that download
though and on another system other than this Dell. If that succeeds
though it points at sha1sum modifying isos if it runs into a warning or
error exit status. That would be very bad news and I'm running this from
debian right now. I will be very surprised if an install does succeed
only as a result of me downloading the dvd image though.

With verizon.net at least and I suspect other dsl providers usually most
internet access is available with dhcp alone. However if I neglect to run
pon dsl-provider and log into verizon.net html access isn't available.
So was the fc6 install try done using only ftp or was it done with some
form of web browser? If wget was used by something somewhere in the
process that may have been why the download didn't work.

Hi all.

Running Debian testing, "aptitude search pod", shows me that there are
2 pod catching clients available as packages, hpodder and podracer. I
am trying to decide which one I want to use, so I'd appreciate
opinions from folks who have used one or both. I'm looking for
something that's easy to use, and that won't require much
management. Yes, I am also aware of the fact that podracer was written
by Lorenzo from this list, however I'd appreciate non-biased opinions
please. If you don't want to clutter the list, feel free to write me
privately. Thanks.

Greg
