Hi all.
Running Debian testing, "aptitude search pod", shows me that there are
2 pod catching clients available as packages, hpodder and podracer. I
am trying to decide which one I want to use, so I'd appreciate
opinions from folks who have used one or both. I'm looking for
something that's easy to use, and that won't require much
management. Yes, I am also aware of the fact that podracer was written
by Lorenzo from this list, however I'd appreciate non-biased opinions
please. If you don't want to clutter the list, feel free to write me
privately. Thanks.

Well, I wasn't really planning to respond to this, since I did write one
of the apps in question, but I think I can give an unbiased opinion in
this situation.
The main difference between hpodder and podracer as far as I am aware is
that podracer supports downloading podcasts distributed via bittorrent.
I had the opportunity to use hpodder some time back and found it quite
easy to use and manage at the time, and that was earlier this year, so
it has most likely improved since then. There are also, as I recall,
some more advanced features available in hpodder that are still lacking
in podracer.
So my unbiased opinion is that if you need podcasts that are distributed
via bittorrent then podracer is about the only app that will catch them,
although bittorrent support has been known to be unreliable at times
during some python release cycles. If you don't need bittorrent
support, then hpodder may be more to your liking, especially if you need
some of its more advanced features such as conversion of subscription
formats from other apps, automatic tagging or file name customization
and collision detection. Wow! Taking a look at the hpodder site, it
looks like it rocks! Seems that if it wasn't for bittorrent support,
podracer would be deprecated. Sorry about that. There's only so much
that can be done with bash. <smile>
HTH a little,
Lorenzo

Greg,
Go for podracer, you'll love it. I have been using it for many months,
and have come to rely on it.

One that I like is a shell script called podget. I'm a poor Linux user but I
found it very easy to figure out. You just add the url of the feeds to a
file and specify how you want your folder structure.

Last night and this afternoon, I tried to install FC6 via the Internet. I
used the rescue CD for booting. I used www.speakupmodified.org for the site
and cdroms.html for the directory. I went through the partitioning process,
choosing the boot loader, selecting dhcp, and setting the root password.
Then, I got this message:
Error
Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata
directory. Please ensure that your install treee has been correctly
generated. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository:
anaconda-base-200612160229.i386
Abort
I have also tried installing from a partition on the hard drive. With the
CD iso images, I got the missing package problem I got with the CD's I used
last week. (I forget which package, but I doubt it matters.) I've tried
using the DVD iso image, as well as the dd command output from it; in both
instances, I was told that the CD images could not be found. (I guess the
rescue CD wants a only CD images, at least on a hard drive.)
I have looked at both the FC6 installation guide and the FC3 on for us
Speakup folks. I saw nothing in either place indicating anything wrong I
may have done. I do not yet have a usb drive or flash device. Anyway, as
always, I'll appreciate any help. If somebody knows there's no help to be
had (knows, not merely supposes), I'll appreciate knowing that, though of
course I won't like it. Thanks!

Interesting, because that's not a directory, it's a file.

Any thoughts on why I (and apparently others) have been unable to install
using the CD images? As noted before, I've tried both CD's and using the
images on a hard drive partition set aside for that. I didn't have this
kind of trouble with the FC3 Cd's I used in two classes last spring. (The
problems I did have then don't matter here and were easy to explain.) I'm
just trying to get this right.

Sorry, but it's a mystery to us as well. Some people have problems,
others do not.
May I suggest trying the stock Fedora distribution? You can actually use
telnet, and you can actually install over http, if you wish, though I
wouldn't recommend the latter unless you have a very fast pipe to the net. You'll need two computers to do a telnet install. Once you get the stock FC6 up, it's now quite trivial to update to a SpeakupModified kernel using yum.

Not good news, but thank you for letting me know that. Thanks also for your
suggestion.

Hi,
I have had the exact same problems as below from both the DVD and individual
CD's.

Thanks!

With verizon.net at least and I suspect other dsl providers usually most
internet access is available with dhcp alone. However if I neglect to run
pon dsl-provider and log into verizon.net html access isn't available.
So was the fc6 install try done using only ftp or was it done with some
form of web browser? If wget was used by something somewhere in the
process that may have been why the download didn't work.

I used askmethod at the boot prompt. When the installer gave me the choice
of installation sources, I chose http. The installer had field for Web site
and for directory, so I put www.speakupmodified.org in the first of these
fields and cdroms.html in the second. My provider is verizon.net. I have
not had access trouble in normal use. (For what it's worth, I do find that
mere FTP doesn't seem to find the FTP sites I want, whereas NCFTP does.
I've found that with FC2 NCFTP would allow me to use the full path to the
directory I want, but with GRML I can only go to the site, and must change
directores only after getting there.)
Thanks for your thoughts. If there's something more I can do, I'll
appreciate that info.

I'm curious about two things and should maybe be curious about more. For
anyone else having installation problems with this distribution, what
company made your computer and what model is the computer? The second
thing I'm curious about is are you using any kind of drive sled which
turns your hard drive into a removeable hard drive? The last check I ran
using sha1sum -c SHA1SUM only complained that it couldn't find the dvd
image and said all other files were okay. I could sacrafice myself and
download the dvd image too and do the checks again and then try another
burn and install. I'll try a burn and install before I do that download
though and on another system other than this Dell. If that succeeds
though it points at sha1sum modifying isos if it runs into a warning or
error exit status. That would be very bad news and I'm running this from
debian right now. I will be very surprised if an install does succeed
only as a result of me downloading the dvd image though.

My computer was put together at the store. I don't know what companies made
its parts. An assembly program I copied from a book told me that the
processor is genuine intel.
It does not have a drive sled. It has one hard drive, and I've try my
installs with either images in a partition on that drive or from CD's. All
the images I used for these attempts passed the sha1sum test without any
warnings, and almost all the CD's burned from many of them passed both that
and the media check that kicks in early in the installation process.
I hope I've addressed what you're looking for.

Albert, thanks much information you provided has provided as many useful
answers as you could possibly provide. The cmos header information may
provide you with some more useful information. If you get a Linux
installed or try again with some form of fc6 speakup disks maybe try using
acpi=force as one of the boot parameters. It could be an old acpi is
being blocked from running by default and acpi=force will clear that and
maybe give fc6 a little more information. Perhaps using lapic as another
boot parameter may improve a few things too. As an alternative apm=on
might be tried to substitute for acpi=force in boot parameters. If a
system does install you may be able to read cmos information at the top of
/var/logs/dmesg and if the cmos information has something else to say
other than intel I'll not be surprised. My cmos information identifies
this machine as a Dell. You could get the name of the computer store
where you bought the machine but I don't know.

Thanks for your suggestions. I also think I'd better try to read up on
them. I expect to put GRML on the hard drive, even if it ends up being
primarily to burn FC6 CD's, so it may give me the information you suggest I
seek.
