Hello all. This is not directly related to Speakup but I was hoping
someone could help. Is it possible to get a Sound Blaster Live to work
under Linux? I got my AWE 64 working, but I do not think it was plug and
play. How would I even begin to set this up in Linux, or is it
impossible? I think I need a sound package or something, right? I am
running Slackware 8.0 and kernel 2.2.19. (I know there are newer kernels,
but I am not confident enough to try compiling one yet.) Thanks to anyone
for any help.

Hi, the SB Live is one of the best soundcards to use
under Linux. I use it myself. All you need to do is open up
/etc/rc.d/modules
and uncomment the module line for the SB Live. It was something like enu10a,
or something close to that.
If you have problems finding the native kernel module let me know and I'll
send you the exact line to uncomment.

it's EMU10k (The name of the chipset, I have one)
and I think the file should be rc.modules (could be mistaken)

Even better but more complex and involved would be to use the alsa package.

For the emu10k module. Alsa will give you more control over the SB Live, if
you wish to use the Speakup lwl reflector for example, you'll need the alsa
drivers. There is some documentation on Speakup regarding alsa.

Hello. Thanks to all who replied on this. I got it working and it turned
out much simpler than I thought. I tried downloading alsa but could not
get it to work. I got various errors and the modules would not load
correctly. Since I still primarily use Windows and have not found what I
consider to be a good mp3 player, I am giving up for now.

Have you tried the package at linuxmafia.org?
it's tgz'd source code, with a script to compile it and turn it into a
package, it's what I used, and it worked great... the only thing you need to
do bfore it will work it compileyour own kernel. If you need help with that
feel free to ask.

You have a few options.
The simplest option is to simply load the emu10k1.o module,
which should detect your sblive card.
The second thing you can do is to compile sblive support directly into the kernel.
Your last option is to get and install the alsa library, drivers, and utilities.
