Hi all.

I just saw Daniel's message about speakup working with 2.6.23, and
probably later versions of 2.6.22 as well. So, I grabbed the 2.6.22.6
source, and tried checking out speakup from cvs, and here's what I
got.

Creating .orig files [..........] done.
Patching files [ppp1 out of 10 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/keyboard.c.rej
pp1 out of 14 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/vt.c.rej
ppppp] done.
Copying files [cccccc] done.

It does look though like the serial part of speakup is just fine.

Greg

I saw Dan's note but haven't followed up with any of it yet and
probably won't for a while but our git repository does work with
2.6.22 although there is lots that does not work. We will of course
in time revert our speakup changes back but for now it compiles
against 2.6.22 with modules or built-in compiling only one synth. We
will not be supporting cvs any further so if it doesn't work now it
shall not again unless someone else takes on keeping it up to date.
For those brave souls that wish to try git the address is
http://linux-speakup.org/speakup.git but this is strictly try at your
own risk and don't complain if it bleeds all over your carpetting.

What is a git repository?
Huh? Does this mean that checkout script won't work any more?

Oops, I didn't mean to send that...

In order to not waste everyone's time, I'll add that I'm toying with the
idea of creating my own live linux distro. I thought that instead of
complaining about other distros dropping support for speakup, I'd just make
my own. Perhaps I'm not the most qualified person to do this. But I figured
I'd learn as I went along.

My live CD is supposed to come up talking via speakup & espeak. You can
download version 0.01 at
http://www.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/nitschke/nitschke-0.01.iso

Note: to su to root, you'll need to enter the root password which is
'nitschke'.

I've already used this live CD a couple of times to fix problems I've had
with machines. But I also know it failed to speak on my workstation at work.
Probably I didn't include the driver modules in the kernel. Like I said, I
may not be the most qualified person to do this. We'll see.

Great idea John. If you get it to the point where it can install some
distribution like debian or something that would be another
installation solution. I don't know anything about Linux from Scratch
but could that work into an easily installed distribution?

Hi why not pick up the orulux progject.
This did some thing similar to what you are trying to do.
Also I am not and the rest of us are not just complaining for no reason. We
are trying to get speech in to off the shelf distros. Ubumpto was the best
for this but you saw the responses I got on that.

Linux from scratch is completely compiled from source
and isn't really a distribution. It could be made into one,
but what results is really quite large in disk space used
and it's tedious to maintain. It is definitely interesting and
a great experience to build the entire mess from source,
but I think it would make more sense to use another
distro's baseline to build a new distro. Otherwise, too
much time is spent on really basic things before you
even get to anything specific to speech or command line
tools. I made a linux from scratch distro a couple of
years ago that I was putting on several machines but
it is too much work to maintain. It will certainly give
you much appreciation for the work that goes into
slackware, debian, gentoo, ubuntu, etc.

There are a few live CD images of linux from scratch
around though that may be interesting as a baseline
for a speech enabled bootable image.

Hi

Is John's disk an lfs disk? As you know, Kirk, I've completed my lfs livecd and it works very well. However, the lfs livecd development team have pointed out that setting up every sound card on boot is very difficult. They wrote:

No. This would also fail on my "Intel HD Audio" onboard sound chip.
There is no "Master", "PCM" is a software-olny volume control that
doesn't even exist until at least one application attempts to play
sound, and the thing you really need to unmute ("Front") is not
accessible via aumix.

So John, I wondered how you dealt with the sound card settings?

Kirk, I don't understand your question about lfs? The lfs livecd enables the fixing of systems. It can contain the sources of every package that built that disk as well as the lfs book with step by step instructions on how to build your own lfs system. Linux From Scratch is exactly what it says on the tin, from scratch. Lfs by default does not use a package manager.

Kirk I guess you have lost my address as I haven't received a reply to my request concerning my lfs livecd.

Gena

Yes, that is my plan. I got a large part of the way through a manual
install on a laptop, fdisk, mkfs.ext3, debootstrap, apt-get kernel, and then
I couldn't get grub to work. The error was something about hdc not having a
bios something or other. Huh? Who cares about hdc, that's the CD drive.

I intend to write an installation script. I'm thinking that it would use a
text config file. You edit this config file, then run the script. It would
be easy enough to tie that into a curses interface eventually.

Besides grub, there are a lot of other things that didn't work. I added
wireless-tools but it didn't see my wireless card. I booted my desktop at
work and got no speech.

Still, I think it's a good first effort.

I know you're not complaining for no reason. But I think this problem is
like most problems in life -- nobody is going to solve it for you. Sometimes
complaining works. I wouldn't count on it though.

Yeah, taking over oralux might be a good idea. I'll contact the maintainer
of oralux. I've corresponded with him before.
