hard drive setup

[Glenn Ervin]

I just ran f disk on my second harddrive, 8.1 GB.
I have set no partitions yet.
I did not enable large disk detection, and therefore, it can only set 2
active partitions.
If I enable large drive detection, I believe it will be setting it to FAT
32.
Will this have an adverse effect on installing Linux?
And can someone give me their preferred partition sizes and number of
partitions for an 8.1 GB drive?

It sounds like you're running fdisk for dos.  Fdisk for linux doesn't have
the prompt for partitioning large disks as far as I remember.  It just does.
Also, if you're installing slack, you'll need an infinitessimal swap
partition, which must be created with fdisk for linux or or partition magic
for linux.  Fdisk is probabley your best bet, though.  I used it because it
was right there in my slackware instalation package.

More to the point is that you're wasting effort partitioning in DOS.
When you get around to installing Linux, you'll be able to partition as
part of that process.

And, since you've an entire hard disk to devote to Linux, don't delay.
You've nothing to lose even if you get things wrong. With an entire disk
to work with, you've got the luxury of learning by doing.

What I did was to use a bootable flopy to boot into slackware.  Oncwe the
kernel and some basic componantes were loaded into ramdisk, I was able to
run fdisk.  Detales are quite well spelled out in the instalation howto that
is available from the speakup ftp server.
Watch out!  The howto states at one point that very little is going on, when
actually, you get a wealth of valuable info from the program.  The important
tidbit in this case is that you need a linux swap partition, and the type
code for linux swap is 82.  I missed this on the first pass or two.  Other
than that, the howto is thurough and clear, and you should have very little
problem with it.

Hi Janina,
I guess I thought that the disk should be configured and I could copy linux
onto it, and install from there, after booting up with a duel boot disk.
So then is it best to download an ISO for a CD, and boot to a CD?
And go on to partition the drive, and set up linux from there?

I seem to recall you saying you have 256 mb of ram. If so you *don't*
need a swap partition twice as large as your ram. Something like 128 megs
will probably be more than adequate. The old wives' tale about swap
partitions has been going around far too long. Good luck.

Hi, Glen:

You've been using DOS or Windows too long! <big grin> You're going to
find that many things you take for granted turn out to be unwarranted
assumptions because of that.

But, take heart. It's good news.

You don't "copy" Linux, you install it. It's a custom process. Think of
it this way. Windows is like buying a suit of clothes off the rack.
Linux is like getting a custom fit from a classy taylor. Heck, the
distribution you choose is rather like picking out your own material.

Below is a script run which shows what happened when I ran fdisk on
my main Linux work horse ( the talking box).  In another email, I
stated that I had a 120 MB swap partition on this system, but as you
can read below, the swap partition is closer to 113 MB.  The other
partition sizes were more important to me when I set this thing up,
and I even considered using a swap file instead of a swap
partition--much like ZIPSLACK does.  These partition sizes are on a
system running Slackware 8.0, so you might have to adjust them a
little to meet your own needs.  I set these partitions up using the
fdisk program which came on the Slackware installation disk--no other
operating systems were necessary to get this talking Linux box up and
running.  The warning produced by fdisk concerning the hard drive set
up can be ignored since it applies only to old versions of lilo and
other operating systems.

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 16278.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hdb: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 16278 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
