Hi Friends. So I am back with the same problem. With the help of my sighted nephew, I can confirm the installation of Fedora takes place when I boot from Disk 1 of the Fedora Distro. Problem is, speakup or dectalk won't communicate that info to me. My nephew saw two options onscreen when the install starts, press enter for the graphical installation or type linux for a textual installation. I tried text speakup_synth=dectlk, but with no success. Dectalk or speakup, i don't know which, just shuts up on me. If the worse came to the worse, if I were to get my nephew's assistance during the install process, how then can i get speakup to work after the install stage? Also, and I don't know if this would solve the problem, the com port 1 and the non-existent com port 3 is sharing the same IRq allocation. Could it be that speakup, because of this shared resource allocation cannot determine exactly on which port my dectalk express is connected too? All solutions to this on running puzzle is very much appreciated. Cheers!

I would think that the com port thing would not be an issue unless you have
something currently using that port, like a modem.
You could change that and it may solve your problem.

If you don't have a com3 in your system, then the IRQ conflict
shouldn't be an issue.
As for if you can get speakup running after the install, there is
always the software speech option, though that's not for a newby to
setup, especially having to rely on sighted help, or worse yet, on no
help at all.

Hi:
I had a similar problem with my LTLK. The infrared port on my laptop
would cause problems with com1 and speakup would not speak. I don't know
if they were sharing IRQ's, but disabling the infrared port fixed my
problem. Have you tried going in your BIOS and looking around for the
com3 that you don't have? Some times motherboards will not have an
external port for a device, but the chipset supports it anyway. Maybe
just a quick look in your BIOS will fix your problem...

What's with all this "com1" talk on this list. I don't believe there is

He's right, Janina. We are all learning how to mount our root file

Hi all. Perhaps I must make my position clear here. First, I have but one
and only one machine, and if I were to install Linux, I'll have to share it
with an already installed Microsoft windows box. Second, my dectalk express
hardware is installed and connected to com port 1, or ser 0 in the Linux
equivalent, and since I'm not yet a linux expert like most of you on this
list, I of course had to highlight my problem in a language that I can
understand in the hope that those of you linux experts who've had experience
with the Microsoft Windows environment can help me with my problem. I am
aware that this is a linux list, and I am aware that I am not a Linux freak
by any stretch of the emagination. But I am willing to learn a totally new
environment to widen my knowledge in computers, and comments like these, far
from helping, will surely turn me off and away from the linux OS that I was
so keen to learn. If i didn't have a problem, If my desire to install linux
went as smooth as some of you had encountered, I won't be struggling and
asking these questions that I deem to be so important to get myself up and
running. I have spent countless hours downloading the various linux
distros, trying my darndest to get them installed, all to no avail. But i
figure it will be comments like these that will turn me away, and not the
installation struggles that I've had to go through. So I'll get off this
list and stick to what I know and be all the happier for it. Cheers!

Actually, the linux designation for the first rs232 serial port is
/dev/ttyS0, or just ttyS0 for short. ser0 is a speakup-specific
parameter.

I didn't mean you. I understand you are new, so would expect you to use
terms you know.
However, others have responded and have not enlightened you as to the
correct Linux term--until today. That did not seem appropriate to me.
It's fine that we can translate terms among the various environments.
But, we should learn the environment specific terms for Linux, if we're
talking Linux. So, now you know.

Yet departments still live on outdated mandates. Debian on a gov website, how
cool is that.

Hi,
Well when you look at the bios witch is what they were talking about the
bios offten erfairs to the ports as com 1 2 lpt 1 etc. So when he is
talking about making bios changes we had better refer to the changes as
the bios refairs to them. There is no tty0 etc. Just like in the bios
there is no lp port.

What's with all this "com1" talk on this list. I don't believe there is
such a thing on Linux. Or, has Microsoft taken over here too?

Hi, well I thought we were talking about changing settings in the bios.
If so the bios as I said does call these devices com x.
My list of devices on this board show com 1 enabled. So telling some
one to enable ttys0 in the bios would be wrong. There is no such device
in the bios.
