Hi all,
I am currently running a dual boot system with Fedora FC3 and Windows XP pro on an NTFS partition.
After I initially installed linux, I wanted to have windows boot by default, so I modified the /etc/grub.conf and set default=1. This worked fine until I did my first yum update.
After the update, I noticed that by default, the system was again booting Linux. I checked the grub.conf and noticed that it had reverted to default=0. I changed it back to default=1; However it no longer seems to be honoring that parameter, as it still boots Linux by default.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be much appreciated.
TIA,
--Al

Look a little further down in the grub conf file. You have a list of kernels
and/or operating systems to build. The first one which appears is the first one
which will boot. Set default to 0 and place your windows lines first if you
wish to build windows by default.

I think what hapen is that you installed another kernel when you updated your system with yum, so now you have more than 2
linux kernels in your grub.conf file. So, Windows is probably number 2 instead of number 1. I think that moving windows
to the top of the file is probably your best bet. However, remember that the next time you install another kernel, it will
probably put it self at the start of the file. So, don't forget to check...

Set the windows section as the default. If you put it before the Linux kernels,
you would set the default to 0. Windows will then boot automatically after 10
seconds (the default timeout set when you installed grub) giving you a chance to
hit the down arrow to select Linux if you want it.

You want to do more than that. In particular, you want to know when your
window of opportunity to press down arrow is present.
For that you must kill the splash screen and the hidden menu choices.
And you must put a Ctrl-G in the Title of at least one kernel
definition.
Now, please, nobody ask me what a Ctrl-G is.

This should be fixed if you're running a recent yum.
The behavior I have noticed is that the newly installed kernel will be
put first, however the kernel to be booted will remain the same. In
other words, the default indicator will be adjusted.
Current yum is in the 2.x range. Sorry, I don't have the exact at hand
at the moment.

Whenever you do a yum upgrade and it upgrades the kernel, or install a kernel
package any other way, a script in that package finds the grub installation and
sets the newly installed kernel as the default. The only way I know to make
Windows once again boot by default is to manually change the config file after
every kernel installation. Both Fedora and Debian are guilty of resetting the
default boot system wienever a new kernel is installed.

Ahh
thanks to everyone who responded, this makes sense now. I just wish that it
would ask before taking it upon itself to reset the boot order. How hard is
it to remove the old kernel from the grub.conf? Is it just a matter of
deleting its associated lines or is there more involved?
Thanks,

Removing the old kernel-s package will automatically remove its lines from
