The last free version of jaws for dos if memory serves was 2.08 and is
still available for download so far as I know. You need to use the ftp
site and search for a dos directory and it's in there you'll find that
package. It's called jdosfree.zip if memory serves too.

Actually, 2.31, june 1, 1994. That's what I got when I downloaded
jdosfree.zip from the JAWS site last june.

Hi,
Since a few of you seem to have this, would someone please check the
license and see if it can be put up on my demos site? I'm afraid that
FS will kill it one of these days and it'll disappear just like so much
else. I would like to save it for historical reasons if nothing else
but it could be useful for people needing a free DOS screen reader. The
same goes for Provox and similar.

Tony,
Provox is already freely available on my web site, but if you would
like to copy it to your new site, help yourself. It has not been
maintained for quite a few years, but there seems to be continued
interest in its availability, and perhaps a little rejuvenation might
not be a bad idea. I am especially interested in the possibility of
supporting espeak in DOS with provox, but don't hold your breath on
that one.

Hi,
Yes, I knew it was freely available but didn't know where. It is now
also available at http://baechler.net/demos/ Thanks for the url. I
didn't know where your site was nowadays.

Out of all the dos screenreaders available, is there any that work with
the artic transport? I remember looking at this a while ago and not
finding one...I recently dug up a 486dx2 and wanted to throw ms-dos 6.22
on it, but the only synth I have is a transport...The last time I used
dos I still had a bns, which was supported by jaws.

transports will work in accent emulation mode and provox works with this.
set transport to 9600,n,7,1
and tell provox it talks to an accent sa.

If the DOS screen reader doesn't have an actual Transport driver you
can always use the Accent and there is one other driver which will
work but the name escapes me.

Hi,
the keynote external used to emulate an accent also. I wish humanware would

You can run the Transport in Accent mode, and use it with any screen reader that supports that. Also, if it was a 615, then, there should've been Business
Vision with it.

Plus, you've got Business Vision in the Transport that can be loaded up to any computer you hook it up to when you follow the commands from the transport
step by step. It was the predecessor of todays Windows screen readers that can be loaded from flash memory devices.

Hi,
I know Vocal-Eyes does but you'll be stuck with a demo or you can buy it
for $250. Other than that, I'm not sure but I think it used to be
fairly popular so probably some other screen reader supports it. I
think Speakup does as well so you could run dosemu or similar.

Yeah it's supported by speakup...one of the main reasons I wanted to
use a dos screenreader is I have a raid controler in one of my servers
who's ACU is only available for dos. I used to use it with jaws and
my bns...but I don't have that anymore :-(
