Sound on the Motherboard

Hi folks,

Well, folks, my modem problem hasn't even been resolved yet, but Gregory is
generously helping me with that one. Thanks, Gregory. <smile>

Now, for another question. I have an e-machine, and the sound is on the
Motherboard. Will it be possible to use this in Linux? Here is the entry
for it, I think, from the lspci file.

00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24
[crystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)
 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 9
 Memory at febef000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)

 Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2

I'm guessing that's my built-in sound device? Has anyone had success in
using and configuring this type of sound device?

Hi Ann. This card is definitely supported by the alsa drivers. However, you are going to have to rebuild your kernel to include general sound support. Also, configure support for plug&play. I believe the string in .config is CONFIG_ISAPNP. After you have done this, you reboot the machine, and then it should find your sound card. Mine is a cs4236b, the only difference in my output is that its listed as cs4610.

This is incorrect. You do not need isapnp support since this
is a PCI device and will be picked up by the bios32 support in the
kernel.  You just need to load the 4610 module. Note that the isa
bus can't map memory just below the 4gb mark like this card can
so it's PCI. Also the i/o space at E400 is a dead give away.

It's supported all right. Be advised, however, that playing 8-bit
sounds might sound like crap (basically unlistenable). Might be
specific bit rates, but I couldn't say for certain.

Was this with kernel drivers? If so the 8-bit mode isn't
supported, alsa converts from 8-16bit in software before dumping to card.
This is like the fact that the es137x has no mu-law support but alsa has a
/dev/audio device.
either use kernel drivers with -DNEED_LINEAR with speak freely or use alsa.

Hi Kerry,

I dunno. I have a couple sound files that play through RealAudio and
sound OK, but with play or aplay, they are absolutely
unintelligible. On this CS4614 in th Thinkpad that is. On my SBLive,
they sound fine. Speak Freely works OK, too. Odd. I dunno what the
deal is, but there you are.

What distribution of Linux are you running?  If it's RedHat you will need to
run sndconfig.

It was my understanding that she was dealing with a "stock" kernel, which
for RedHat means OSS?  Don't you have to recompile etc. for ALSA?  If I
misunderstood the situation I apologize.

Hi Cecil,

     In RH, all the sound drivers are modularized.  If you use ALSA, the 
OSS modules will be ignored and never loaded.  The only one from the 
stock kernel that gets loaded is soundcore.

Actually, you don't need to recompile the kernel as long as sound
support was selected. You do have to obtain appropriate Red Hat
binaries for ALSA, or compile ALSA and add it to
/etc/modules.conf appropriately, removing OSS support.

But, it's possible to go back and forth between OSS and ALSA, as
long as you get all the details. I have done this in the past and
have thought of building a script to do it.

Where to start.

Hi everyone.  Anna Schneider here.  I've been quiet for a long time.

So here's the deal.  I got my computer a couple of months ago and have 
made almost no progress.  I'm overwhelmed is the problem.  I don't know 
where to start.  Even the information available is too vast for me to know 
what to do with it.  I'm one of those people who can't read How To and 
documentational text for very long.  My brain fries pretty fast, and if I 
don't see any immediate application to it, it's even worse.  I need some 
specific things to focus on to start and I need to know where to find 
them.

So, I know about the info pages, and I know that there is a tutorial on 
the CD's I got, thoug I can't now remember how to use the cd's even though 
someone told me.  And I know that a couple of the first things I need to 
accomplish are getting online with my new computer and bringing some sort 
of word processing/editting into play.  Can anyone give me some very 
specific ideas on where to look to learn how to accomplish these things?

Good to see you back here on the Speakup list. Also, good to see
you're posting using Pine. I guess you've got some things
working! <grin> That's good.

Now, what next?

I think the magic might be hiding behind a door marked "focus on
something." Can we pick something specific to focus on? What
would that be? Here are some thoughts:

Writing and editing text. You're already doing this since you're
sending mail from Pine. By default, pine uses a text editor
called pico. So, if you just type pico at your shell prompt,
you'll find you're in the same composer. You can create text
files and then save them with pico's commands. 

Ifyou do 'man pico' I think you'll find this man pageis not at
all intimidating. And, anything you create in pico you can later
read with more advanced editors like emacs and vim. So, there's
every reason to get 100% comfortable with pico.

Need a step up from pico because you want search and replace?
Nano would be a great next step. We can talk about that if you
like.

How about web browsing? Are you comfortable with lynx yet? Does
your lynx show web pages in a blind friendly way, or is the
cursor parked at the lower right of the screen? Press the small
key in the middle of the bottom row of keys on the numeric keypad
to find out. If it says something like "line 25 position 80" we
have to make some configuration changes.

It's worth making these changes not just for web pages, though.
Lynx is a great way to look at files in your home directory. When
you do:

	lynx .

you get all the files in your home directory. You can arrow up
and down through them, and you can quickly check what's in those
files, and come back to the list with the right arrow and left
arrow keys respectively. If it's a file you want to throw away,
just press 'r' and, boom, it's gone.

But, does your lynx show a lot of permissions, size, date and
time stuff before reading the filename? That's the default, and
it's not at all blind friendly. We can fix that, if you like.
Just give the word, and I'll dredge up the syntax, or just send
you a default configuration file that's more blind friendly.

You mentioned the Red Hat documentation CD ROM. Yes, you need to
first extract the files there onto your hard disk. That involves
using a command called tar. It's easiest just to tell you how to
do that. Remember this tip, because you'll need it over and over
and over and over and over and over ...

tar xzpf [file.name]

If the file ends in .tar.gz or .tgz, and

tar -xjpf

if it ends in .tar.bz2 or .tbz

Of course the [file.name] part above is a tad tricky too. You
must first mount the cd rom, probably:

mount /mnt/cdrom

and then you must path your command to that file
system--something like:

tar xzpf /mnt/cdrom/Getting_Started [tab]

Now, notice where I put [tab]. If you press the tab key after
typing part of a command name or file name or file path, linux
will fill out the rest for you. If you get a beep instead, either
you need to type more to choose between a couple of options
(files that start with the same letters, for example), or you did
something incorrectly and might as well bail out with Ctrl-C and
start over.

Now, you'll need lynx to read the files in the directory the
above tar command creates, so we'd best get your lynx configured
to be very blind friendly before we go at this task.

I think this is supported. the CS PCI codecs appear supported
so  you should be able to get htis to work, but I doubt if zipslack
will do it you can try if you like :-)
I think the kernel might have cs drivers not sure.
