Bootdisk for Redhat 7.2 with Speakup1.0

Hello, listers!
I tried to update my existing Redhat 7.1 to 7.2 using the bootdisk, loaded
with Speakup1.0. However, strange things started to happen. First of all,
the numpad keys stopped working on the first or second step of the
installation. Second, I had to once even reinitialize the update procedure
because Speakup completely stopped speaking.
I am using DoubleTalk LT and this is the first time I experienced such a
behavior from Speakup.
Any ideas?

Hi, you must make absolutely sure when you are doing the install to choose
either the Speakup.map or speakup_lt.map.
If you choose something such as US.map You will not beable to use
speakup'snumpad during the install or after the install has finished.

Hi, Tom!
Somehow I did not see Speakup map in the list of keyboards, but upon a
second look, after your message, I found it and, sure enough, installation
went on smoothly.
By the way, do you know if there is a way to specify keymap on a command
line to the boot loader?

On the linux-speakup.org web site, I do not find boot disks for RedHat 7.2 
and Speakup 1.0; everything I can find there is for older versions.  Did 
you just make these yourself?

No, the disks are there. Just follow the "FTP site" link instead of "index".
In the directory "Disks", look for "Redhat" and then "7.2".

Hi Vic,

OK; I found them, thanks to your good advice...  But, there are no README 
files or anything to explain what to do with these...  I'm assuming that I 
would want the boot.img file, and that I would rawrite this to a floppy 
from which I could boot my system to begin the installation.  But, I have 
some questions.  Must the installer use X Window?  Must I have a monitor 
connected in order to complete the install, and how can I do a text-based 
install of the OS, so as to do it without sighted help?

Hi, Darrell!
Yes, you have to rawrite the boot.img to the floppy.
When your floppy starts working, after several seconds there will be a
pause. At this pause type

text speakup_synth=[your synthesizer's abbreviation]
for example, I use ltlk for DoubleTalk LT.
make sure your Redhat CD is in the drive. Are you familiar with Speakup at
all?

Hi Vic,

Yes; I have Speakup running on both my Slackware boxes at this time.  So, 
for an Accent PC, I'd type the following:

text speakup_synth=acntpc

I am not very familiar with parameters at the boot prompt; I have in the 
past just used the proper version of Speakup which is specific to my 
synthesizer.

Oh, and another question.  Am I to assume that the word "text" at the 
beginning of the parameter indicates that the RedHat installation will be 
done in text mode?

Hi. Well, first off you can put
Red Hat into a text mode setup by typing something such as.

text speakup_synth=synth

This will put the installation into text mode, and also tells the kernel to
load speakup with a specific synth. Note, to replace synth with the synth
name such as:

speakup_synth=dectlk

for the Dectalk Express.
In answer to your question about a monitor it depends on if you plan to
configure x windows. I'm looking at Gnome 2 cvs so naturally I had to
configure x, and that requires a monitor.
However, if you don't install x or don't want to set it up you won't need a
monitor. The bash shell works fine with out a monitor.
Suggestion here. Plug in a monitor and mouse to configure x windows,  reset
your computer to run level 3, and then remove them from your system if you
want.

least when you login that keymap gets loaded.

I am not really sure how Speakup handles internal synthesizers, but with an
external one I would try to specify a serial port in addition. However, it
definitely does not apply to your Accent PC.
