Hello SpeakUp List!

I've just been make aware of this list, so I'm writing to introduce
myself. I'm Henrik Nilsen Omma, Accessibility Coordinator at Ubuntu.

I see from the archives that there have been some questions about Ubuntu
Edgy, Orca etc. and some misconceptions that I'll try to clear up.

The aim of the Live CD is to provide an environment for exploring the
system and later installing it. This should work independently for both
visually and mobility impaired users. We are just a few bugs away from
making it work smoothly ;) -- but we still have a couple of weeks.

The default Ubuntu installer is written in GTK (as it runs on a Gnome
system). The reason it does not speak to Orca at the moment is that it
is running as root, while Orca runs as a user. We are preparing a fix
for this, but for now you can work around it by running Orca from a root
terminal and then running 'ubiquity' from there as well (the installer).
The Kubuntu version of the installer is written in QT, but most VI
users would not want to install KDE at this point. Things are looking
better for KDE4 though.

We have also included speakup with our default Edgy kernel, but have not
prepared the required command line scripts for it yet. Any help with
testing speakup in Edgy and preparing such scripts would be great!

About myself: I'm not visually impaired but I do have a mobility
impairment. Of the Linux access tools, I only use sticky keys myself
though I do have a working familiarity with the others. My main role is
to encourage, facilitate and coordinate accessibility development in
Ubuntu. I work with end-users in the forums and mailing lists and with
the core developers to implement features.

Henrik

Thank you sir for all your efforts. I do have a question though. Is your
ubuntu installer intel mac compatible? and if so what will the accessibility
options offer for it. I mainly work with macs but have a couple of pc's I
can install this ubuntu on. I tried at one time to install it on an hp vetra
p3 866 but that didn't work at all.

Hi Gabriel,

It boots and installs on normal PPC's but not yet Intel Macs without
some hacking. I've sen it run nicely on the Mac virtual machines though.

Sorry, I don't know what the problem might be with that particular
machine. I don't see it in this list of tested Toshiba laptops:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptopsToshiba

Laptops sometimes have ACPI problems. You might try booting with
*acpi*=off added to the boot parameter list (pressing F6 at initial boot
screen).

You'll probably more precise advice on the ubuntu user mailing list or
in the forums.

Henrik

Yes, though I would recommend you try Orca on Edgy.

Excellent stuff Henrik, good to see you on here. When you mean
running Orca from a terminal as root, how would you do that from the
live cd? Can you run Orca from a separate console? I'm a bit
confused, though I know I aught not to be.

I've only tried it in a gnome-terminal window (can be started by
pressing Alt-F2 then typing 'gnome-terminal') but may also work from a
separate console (I guess 'orca' will work, 'ubiquity' may not as it
needs an X display).

In the gnome terminal type 'sudo su' -- on the live CD you don't need a
password. Type 'orca &' <return> and then 'ubiquity' <return> (leave off
the quotes).

Hi Henrik, I tried these directions with the 64-bit version, and it
still didn't allow ubiquity to speak. I am using the daily build
from 5 October.

I'm going to download the latest 32-bit version, but don't think it
should make a difference. Of course I'm using it on a 64-bit Amd processor!
