Apparently, Speakup Utils has problems if the exact settings it expects
aren't present. For example, with the Accent PC, there is no voice
setting, but instead, there is a tone setting. So, when you arrow to the
voice setting, a value of 0 is reported. After this, all values are stuck
at zero and cannot be changed. It would seem to me that the logical
approach would be to skip non-existent settings. Another approach would
be to make all synthesizers in Speakup have the same controls. I.E. give
the Accent drivers a voice setting and have it map to the tone setting.
This is basically what screen readers for that other OS tend to do.
Which approach seems more logical to you all?

I would say that speakuputils is just about a moot point now. The
latest CVS versions of Speakup have additional keys for changing
pitch, rate and volume. from the console now. Just use speakup-1 thru
speakup-6 to change them. <Hmmm> no tone or voice here. Any way,
we're close. The speakupconf script that can be found in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/speakup can save and restore speech
settings and is sensative to which synth is being used at the time.

It isn't moot, I'll say that much. I liked speakup config, easy easy
interfase. This looks similar, and should be included in speakup 2.00.
Thanks,
Nick

Ahh but if we add voice and tones to the keys in Speakup's speech
adjustments, you would have about the same thing without having a
separate utility. The speakupconf script is already there and does
the saving and restoring of speech parameters so I don't know what
else the utils have but I would think it would be less overall
maintenance to incorporate the remaining parameters into Speakup's
controls and drop the other. Just an idea of mine.

I tend to agree. Now that I'm aware of the speakupconf script, it is a
much more elegant solution since it stores the settings by synthesizer
name. It's especially handy for switching from the software speech
support provided by speechd_up and hardware synthesizers. I'd say that
this should indeed be standard and documented in Speakup 2.0 final.

What if someone wants an easy menu structure like way for them to be able to
change settings? That would have been something I would have used for a
time.

Well with the latest CVS version of Speakup you have part of that menu
business you speak of. True, the items aren't self identified; I
mean, you would need some quick documentation or simply remember the
key assignments.
spk-1 & 2 decrease and increase volume, spk-3 & 4 do pitch, and spk-5
& 6 alter speech rate. I think spk-7 & 8 could be tone and maybe
spk-9 & 10 could be for voice. One should note that some of these
options are moot for given synthesizers. Beyond that, dunno if the
configuration program has any other options or not.
