Now that I'm aware of the speakupconf script, it is a much more elegant solution since it stores the settings by synthesizer name. It's especially handy for switching from the software speech support provided by speechd_up and hardware synthesizers. I'd say that this should indeed be standard and documented in Speakup 2.0 final.
