What could I be doing wrong here? I read over the man page for usermod and assumed based on what I read that I was on the correct path. Any suggestions appreciated. Ari, When I run id I get the following. uid=500(showell) gid=500(showell) groups=500(showell),503(x10) I did try logging out of one shell and logging back in with no change. I thought just by changing the ownership of the files would have done the job as they seemed to have the correct read write access. After running chmod that fixed it all just fine.
