Hi, some comments here. There is a much easier way to configure wvdial than
Janina used.
As root simply type:
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
wvdial in 99% of the time will find, configure your modem, and all you need
do is add your phone number, user name, and password.
If the probe fails then you will have to go with Janina's earlier
instructions.

Ah, wonderful. Guess I might have read the wvdial man page!
<grin>
I'm keeping this message for the next HOWTO. I'm inspired that we
need a "Now What" HOWTO.

Are we actually going to write a now what howto? I'd like to contribute if
we did.
Explorer has caused a general protection fault in module kernel32.dll. I'm sick of Winblows!

Yes, I'm planing on it. I haven't gotten any further than
beginning a collection of tid bits, though.
You should know that the Speakup Modified Installation HOWTO took
over 7 months to complete.
I hope the "Now What?" HOWTO will be quicker because it's
simpler.
I should note, however, that I am intending to keep it Red Hat
specific in order to keep it simple. But, I would certainly
welcome involvement of anyone and everyone, and I would be quite
happy for someone else to make a Slack or Debian specific
version.

I did get my networking fixed. I did end up using static ips for both eth1
and the laptop.
To be perfectly honest, the problem I had mor then anything, was hearing
five different things from five different people, and not knowing enough
about it to decide who to listen to and who not to. I'd read the manpages
and documentation, but didn't understand them, and couldn't figure out how
to do things.
I'm not critisizing anyone by any means, I'm just saying that it's hard to
follow advice when you're told different things.
I will say this though, thank you to the people who got me straightened

Let me explain a little about my setup here.
I have a p4, 1.7ghz with 256M ram and a 40 GB drive.
I have windows xp home preinstalled, hard drive is partitioned as ntfs5,
and is one big partition.
I did not want to redo everything and I did not know if I just could rip
apart a ntfs5 partition with partition magic with out the ntfs5 fs
complaining.
So here is what I did, I went to
http://www.vmware.com and grabbed the latest version of vmware workstation
3.1 for windows.
I have installed Debian woody Linux inside that virtual machine and am
using a braille N speak as my synthesizer.
Sometimes the speech seems really sluggish, is there a good way to enter
speech box mode? What should my handshaking be set to?
I think the vmware solution is pretty cool as I can work on apache and just
press alt control enter and check on the status in my ie window..
I have Linux doing nat for my actual win xp box and my 2k pro box.. it
works good. I just put the adapter in vmware in to bridged mode and give it
my static dsl address and use ip_aliasing to give a private address and
assign private addresses to my windows xp and 2k box..
I was wondering if anyone has this particular setup or has ever played with
it at all.. and maybe could offer me some pointers.
thanks,
Patrick
PS. What is so good about slackware then since it has no way to manage
packages or remotely download needed dependencies or anything..

Dietmar,
Slackware has its own way to get your dial-up access working, it's called
pppconfig. If you run pppconfig, it asks you all the relevant questions,
and the resulting scripts work with no problems.
Cheers.

Can I use that command line if the modem is connected but there are no
drivers for it?
If I need to install drivers for that modem, how can I do it if I don't know
what type of modem it is?
I hope it is possible.

If there are no drivers for it, your modem won't connect, period, unless
it's a hardware modem.

Hmmm, if you don't know what it is, or what chip set it is, it may be
tricky, but you can get the full low-down at:

For all Linux access to Win modems.
Cheers.

Hi,
It is an internal modem, not a USB one.
I've tried with wvdialconf but after searching a little, it told me that the
modem cannot be detected.
Does this mean that it is a win modem?
A few more questions:
1. Are there any possibilities to be a hardware modem but it just can't be
detected by wvdialconf?
2. If it is a win modem, can I configure the computer to connect to internet
using the network?
I have another computer running Windows 2k linked with this one and I could
use it to connect the internet.
If I can, can you give me some hints how to configure it, to use the network
for connecting to internet?
Thanks.

Snip.

drivers for it?
What type of connection do you have, and is this a win modem? If it is a
serial external modem usually wvdialconf will pnp detect it, and if it is an
internal hardware modem wvdialconf will detect it. If it is a usb modem you
will need to have usb modem support and usb serial support. Don't know if
wvdialconf can pick that up. I imagine it could if kudzu properly detected
it, and set it up in /etc/modules.conf.
If it is a win modem the modem is probably not able to be used. Need more
info on the modem.
snip.
If I need to install drivers for that modem, how can I do it if I don't know
what type of modem it is?
I hope it is possible.
Well, we need to know some basics like if it is a hardware modem or a Win
modem chip set which needs a special driver. Also what type of connection
serial or usb. If it is internal pci or isa.

Well, there's more than one way to do it. Here's a simple way to
get you started ...
Attached to this email is a file called wvdial.conf. It goes in
your /etc directory, so you'll have to be root to mv it over
there.
You will also need to edit it. First, the simple stuff. Change
the phone number to the one you use for your isp. The number in
this file is UU_Net dial up for West Houston, Texas, because
that's where I am today. The '9,' is because I'm in a hotel and
must dial '9' to get out, and the ',' tells the modem to wait a
second (or so) before continuing to dial.
Also, put your real username and your real password in.
The tricky part is finding out what /dev/ttyS port your modem is
on. Here's how to find out, assuming you actually hear dialtone
and touchtones when your modem dials:
As root do:
echo ata >/dev/ttyS0
If that comes back with just a prompt, that's not the one. So, do
up arrow, backspace once to take the 0 off, 1 to change the
command to read:
echo ata >/dev/ttyS1
and enter. If, you get dial tone, great. If not, keep trying,
with 2, then 3, etc. You'll probably find it by 3, and you'll be
trying to figure out how to turn the darn thing off. Here's how:
echo ath >/dev/ttySX
where X is the number that actually got the dial tone, 0 1 2 or
3, whichever it turns out to be.
Now, you know how to edit that line in the wvdial.conf file.
And, you can use pico to make all these edits!
Now, to actually dial do:
wvdial &
The '&' symbol tells Linux to put the dialup job in the
background so you can have your root console back. Just press
enter and you'll get it back without killing your dialup. You may
later get some messages again on screen, just hit enter again.
You're now online.
