Hi Friends. It seems to me that my ambition to install and learn the ins and outs of the linux OS has all but failed. I have copied the installation howto into braille to the letter as ready reference, done all that is required of me at the preparation stage, even did almost nothing else but tried to get FC3 installed for the past 2 days, but nothing seems to work. I can't even get past the first stage of text installation simply because speakup refuses to talk to my Dectalk express. I cannot say if my dectalk express is the source of the problem because it works very well with Wineyes and jaws even. I am totally stuck now and don't know what else I can do. Unless someone who has installed linux with the dectalk express synth is willing to help me, i'll have to shelf the idea of installing linux, at least for the foreseeable future. Cheers!

Just because you can't get fedora installed, doesn't mean you should
give up on installing gnu/linux. After all, fedora is not the only
gnu/linux distribution out there. There are also:
slackware: <http://www.slackware.com/>,
debian: <http://www.debian.org/>,
gentoo: <http://www.gentoo.org/>
just to name a few. The best thing of course would be if a fedora user
was able to help you solve your problems, and get up and
running. However, if that doesn't happen, look at other distributions
before deciding to quit on gnu/linux. The good news is that there are
slackware, debian, and gentoo users on here as well.

Let's review a bit, if you don't mind. Pardon if you've mentioned this
already:
1.) Where did you get FC3?
2.) Do the best of your ability, you have verified you have good
installation media? Date/time stamps all match, byte size, etc. I
understand you can't run rsync.
3.) Have you tried booting without the speakup_ser part of the
command?
4.) Do you know for a fact your bios allows booting from cd rom?
That this feature is, in fact, enabled?

Going back to this orriginal thread, When your decktalk stops speaking, or you
tell it to shutup, what does speakup say when you hit the read current line key?
The bootup process will say a lot of what may seem to be useless information.
Have you tried specifying the speakup and text parameters but not the specific
serial port?

To this list of questions I add, is your serial port enabled properly in the
bios?I've seen it happen where my bns won't startup doing a fresh install on one
computer but it will work fine on another computer using the same installation
media. How about a more basic question, how's the condition of your cable?
What happens when you move the cable connecting the synth to the computer around
a little.

Hi, the fermware is what makes the dectalk express talk. It is the
software loaded on board the unit.

One more note what is the fermware of the dectalk express. It should be
4.2b or later. There were problems with some of the earlier fermwares of
the dectalk express. You can get the latest fermware for your dectalk
express from the gw micro home page at http://www.gwmicro.com Also you
note that you are using the express with other screen readers. It is
always a good idea while probing for a synthesizer to reset the
synthesizer so it is set to the defaults. Hth

Let's review a bit, if you don't mind. Pardon if you've mentioned this
already:
1.) Where did you get FC3?
2.) Do the best of your ability, you have verified you have good
installation media? Date/time stamps all match, byte size, etc. I
understand you can't run rsync.
3.) Have you tried booting without the speakup_ser part of the command?
4.) Do you know for a fact your bios allows booting from cd rom? That
this feature is, in fact, enabled?

all that is required of me at the preparation stage, even did almost
nothing else but tried to get FC3 installed for the past 2 days, but
nothing seems to work. I can't even get past the first stage of text
installation simply because speakup refuses to talk to my Dectalk
express. I cannot say if my dectalk express is the source of the

One other question. Are you using the built-in serial port on the
computer, or a serial card? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think
Speakup only probes the standard I/O address and IRQ for com1 through
com4. Many PCI serial cards will try to use very odd addresses and high
IRQs.

To: jaffar, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Not necessarily. I had a laptop once where the serial port worked in
Windows, but not in DOS. It is possible for the OS to do some
reassigning, of ports.
Arcane and unlikely as this may be, it's worth probing. Point of fact is
that the Express is a common device used for Speakup and for
installation of Linux with Speakup. So, it's unlikely that the problem
is in the source files.
Are you per chance on a laptop?

After what, the initial probe by speakup? If so, then this sounds like
a probing issue somewhere, likely hardware related. If on the other
hand this is when the system has booted, then that sounds like a
possible kernel panic or init problem to me. I don't know about
speakup 2.0, but in older speakup versions, if there was a kernel
panic or init problem, speakup would say parts of words, (I.E. hitting
numpad-8 on a blank line would say something like "bla", and cut the
rest).

You have to install a firmware if your current firmware isn't the correct
version. When you turn on your decktalk, it says version number.

If he's getting kernel panic, there should still be speech, as you say.
Actually, it should be helpful re the reason for the panic. It should be
intelligible.

To: jaffar, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Isn't there a way to test the synth before installing?
Also, I wonder if the cMos settings are not set at the defaults for the
serial ports.

Subject: at a loss
Hi Friends. It seems to me that my ambition to install and learn the ins
and outs of the linux OS has all but failed. I have copied the installation
howto into braille to the letter as ready reference, done all that is
required of me at the preparation stage, even did almost nothing else but
tried to get FC3 installed for the past 2 days, but nothing seems to work.
I can't even get past the first stage of text installation simply because
speakup refuses to talk to my Dectalk express. I cannot say if my dectalk
express is the source of the problem because it works very well with Wineyes
and jaws even. I am totally stuck now and don't know what else I can do.
Unless someone who has installed linux with the dectalk express synth is
willing to help me, i'll have to shelf the idea of installing linux, at
least for the foreseeable future. Cheers!

In most cases, yes. However, if something tries to kill the "init"
process, speech will suddenly become very choppy, as though it were
constantly being interrupted. I ran across this once when I was
experimenting with an initred under an older release of Slackware. I
think it was Slackware 9.1, and it didn't have the mkinitrd command as
later versions do. So, I had hand-built the initrd, and the
documentation with the kernel tells you to run an exec command to run the
regular initrd rather than letting the system do it for you. I messed up
the exec command, so there was nothing to replace the linuxrc script which
was acting as the init process, so I got the kernel panic for an attempt
to kill init, and speech became almost unusable. I had to read it word by
word, and infer the message from the choppy sounds the synthesizer was
making. Other than that, speech should remain operable in most panic
situations, but if something is killing the init process, that could
explain the garbled sounds.

Just because you can't get fedora installed, doesn't mean you should
give up on installing gnu/linux. After all, fedora is not the only
gnu/linux distribution out there. There are also:
slackware: <http://www.slackware.com/>,
debian: <http://www.debian.org/>,
gentoo: <http://www.gentoo.org/>
just to name a few. The best thing of course would be if a fedora user
was able to help you solve your problems, and get up and
running. However, if that doesn't happen, look at other distributions
before deciding to quit on gnu/linux. The good news is that there are
slackware, debian, and gentoo users on here as well.

One more note what is the fermware of the dectalk express. It should be
4.2b or later.
There were problems with some of the earlier fermwares of the dectalk
express.
You can get the latest fermware for your dectalk express from the gw
micro home page at http://www.gwmicro.com
Also you note that you are using the express with other screen readers.
It is always a good idea while probing for a synthesizer to reset the
synthesizer so it is set to the defaults.

That this feature is, in fact, enabled?

funny, but my situation was just the opisit. my double talk lt didn't work
in win eyes or jaws but it worked in linux with speakup and emacsspeak. i
called rc systems to ask a question on why and they tol me its cause win
eyes and jaws use they're own drivers. they had me test my lt with
hyperterm and it worked there. but only works with a screen reader in linux.

One more note what is the fermware of the dectalk express. It should be
4.2b or later.
There were problems with some of the earlier fermwares of the dectalk
express.
You can get the latest fermware for your dectalk express from the gw
micro home page at http://www.gwmicro.com Also you note that you are
using the express with other screen readers.
It is always a good idea while probing for a synthesizer to reset the
synthesizer so it is set to the defaults.

That this feature is, in fact, enabled?

installation howto into braille to the letter as ready reference, done
all that is required of me at the preparation stage, even did almost
nothing else but tried to get FC3 installed for the past 2 days, but
nothing seems to work. I can't even get past the first stage of text
installation simply because speakup refuses to talk to my Dectalk
express. I cannot say if my dectalk express is the source of the
problem because it works very well with Wineyes and jaws even. I am
totally stuck now and don't know what else I can do. Unless someone who
has installed linux with the dectalk express synth is willing to help
me, i'll have to shelf the idea of installing linux, at least for the
foreseeable future. Cheers!
