I had a laptop once where the serial port worked in Windows, but not in DOS. It is possible for the OS to do some reassigning, of ports. Arcane and unlikely as this may be, it's worth probing. Point of fact is that the Express is a common device used for Speakup and for installation of Linux with Speakup. So, it's unlikely that the problem is in the source files.
