ADSL and linux

Good evening list.
I have a toy linux box that I'm using to teach myself some basic linux consepts and such.  I have nearly decided to switch from cable to ADSL for a number of reasons.  When all of my machines connect to cable, both linux and windows contact my isps servers automaticly.  ADSL networks can be set up to do this, but they require a piece of software to be installed on the client machine.  I am sure this does not spell woe for linux users, but is there anything extra I'll need to connect to DSL?  Where would I look for software and docs?

Hi Erik,

	You need a ppoe client. You can get one from your distribution ( I thnk most distributions now include one) or you can go to:

	http://www.roaringpenguin.com/home.html

	... and check in their Products list fro rpppoe. I used it before,  though I'm now on cable since adsl isn't available where I live now.

greetings.  there is a package I'm using called rp-pppoe which emulates
the enternet 300 client required by some dsl isps.  I think this comes
standard with most linux distros now a days

if you have trouble with it, let me know and I will find it.  what
distro are you using to learn on?

You are better off not using the pppoe client from thedistribution --
I had trouble with the Debian one and got much better results from
the one from roaring penguine.

Thanks, I recognize enternet300 from the days of 256 K DSL.  Grin.  I am
pretty sure that is the guts of the program isps around here use.
I'm using slack 8.0.  Sorry for not mentioning that earlier.

I am using RP-PPPOE on slackware 8 with no problems.  Just make sure you 
either have PPP compiled into your kernel or as a module but not both or 
you will run into problems.  This happened to me earler this week and it 
took a couple of hours of messing around before I found out I had both 
PPP compiled in the kernel and a module in my module tree.
