Hello everyone, I downloaded and untared speakup 1.0.
When I ran ./install under redhat 7.2, I got the following.
I had to retype it out, so I hope I didn't miss anything.
Can anyone let me know if I need to fix anything, or if I should keep going?
P.S. I checked, and I don't have a linux directory in /usr/src, so I created
a simlink with the following command
ln -s linux-2.4.7-10 linux
no should I just run ./install again?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Ok, this is something I don't like about Redhat, putting these dashes and
a number after stuff, cos it can confuse people. You should be able to
type this instead.

go into /usr/src and type:
ln -s linux-2.4.7 linux

You might need to remove linux first, if it moans that it alreadyh exists.
Once you've done that, try running your ./install from within
speakup-1.0.0 again.

Hi there,
Unless you have a modified kernel (ie you need extra drivers etc that aren't in the standard redhat kernel)
you should just use the speakup modified redhat kernel available from the website.
I haven't looked to see if there's a patched kernel rpm for 7.2, but if there isn't, there should be no reason why you can't use the 7.3 rpm on 7.2,
the kernel shouldn't depend on anything that's been updated.
The only time you would want to use the speakup tar file under redhat is if you need a custom kernel for some other purpose.
Regards
Aaron

Hi Jeremy,
I am not sure where Toby gets his ideas about Redhat being so
drastically different from his favorite distribution, but it seems you
did not have the source code for your kernel installed. If you had, you
most assuredly would have seen a linux directory when you were in
/usr/src. Unless you have a specific reason for building your kernel
though you can ftp to bumpy.braille.uwo.ca and go to the directory
/pub/speakup/disks/redhat/7.2/kernel and download the binary rpm. Or as
somebody suggested you could try the 7.3 rpms. Make sure though that if
you try the 7.3 kernel and you want to try alsasound, you use the 7.3
alsasound. Alsa is kernel dependent!

Actually, Red Hat has ceased creating an /usr/src/linux symlink.
They create /usr/src/linux-2.4 as a symlink to the kernel
sources. I generally just create a symlinux called linux to this
one, but I do do it by hand.

Ok, I plan on getting the speakup redhat rpm file, but I've already created
the linux simlink in /usr/src, and ran ./install
It worked, but I got some errors, but they appeared to be errors for
processors I don't run, I don't believe I got any i386 errors.
My question is, will I have problems now since I ran the ./install, and
probably some patches were made somewhere?
Another questions is, I ran make config( I believe it was make config) and
was going through the kernel, if I don't know what to choose in Redhat 7.2,
if I just press enter, will it take the option already in the kernel?
BTW, I've never recompiled the kernel on this box, I've compiled at least
one kernel before, but it's been a long time, I think redhat 5.x.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
Sorry about that. I haven't attempted to build a kernel of my own since
I installed 7.3. (See Janina's message). If you are building from
stock Redhat kernel source rpms it is normal to get errors for other
processors--you should be fine. However, if these errors bug you, you
can always get the full kernel source at ftp.kernel.org.I think though
I'd stick with the official Redhat stuff.

Hi, I don't believe there is a kernel directory in the
/pub/speakup/disks/redhat/7.2/kernel directory. There is either a kernel or
kernels directory in the 7.3 directory.
Also, I think there may have been kernels in the 7.2 directory, but what if
I have 2.4.7-10, do I just need the kernel rpm, or do I need to upgrade
other kernel rpms as well? Also, one more question, what kernel do I need as
far as the 386, etc. I have a pIII 1.2GHZ.
Thanks,

Jeremy
