Hi,
is there an instant messaging program that runs from the shell that is
compatible with aim?

naim and centericq are the only two I know of. That or you can make a
really simple client using perl's Net::AIM module.

there's a few. tnt is a console aim client that runs under emacs. It's
a little old but still seems to work fine.
centericq is another console messaging client that does
aim/jabber/irc/etc. the interface takes a little getting used to
however. another option is to use imcom to connect to a jabber server
and use the aim transport. finally you can find an irc server that has
imserv installed and use that. try irc.the-bofh.com.

... of course, this probably only happens for tcsh which uses wait4(),
which is why I never saw it. Serves people who use that abomination
right 8^)
