It's a little old but still seems to work fine. centericq is another console messaging client that does aim/jabber/irc/etc. the interface takes a little getting used to however. another option is to use imcom to connect to a jabber server and use the aim transport. finally you can find an irc server that has imserv installed and use that. try irc.the-bofh.com.
