Hi all,
I downloaded the file ex-us.exe (DECTalk Express 4.61) from the GWMicro web
site. I do not understand how to install it. Am I correct that it is
firmware and installs onto the actual DECTalk unit? If this is the case,
how does one install it to the unit? I unzipped the package and see stuff
about installing onto the computer but not to the unit.
Thanks

Once you install to the computer you can use the dt_load command to
install to the express. See the express users guide witch should come
with the package you downloaded for more information.

Hi,
Its best to do this in dos mode - put the file on a floppy disk - after
uncompressing it, and run the install program. Choose not to have the
autoexec.bat or config.sys updated. Then go into a dos window and run
the update from there. Read the manual/readme for instructions.
Thanks.
Andrew.

Running the update means just to install the firmware, and it will
over-write what is residing in the DecTalk now.

Hi. I don't know if this is a stupid or an irrelevant question, but I am
running xp and the nearest thing to dos i have got is the command prompt.
Can i install it using the command prompt then? I actually installed it
with the install.exe file from windows, and although it said that dectalk
had been installed, i still can't determine if the driver itself has been
installed or not. Cheers!

What does it say when you turn off the DecTalk, and turn it back on again?
It should read your firmware number, and if it reads the number that you
just installed, you are good to go.

I have not upgraded the firmware yet; however, when I do turn it off and on
again, all it says is
dectalk express is ready
external power on
It does not give a version number. Does this mean it is soo old it can't
be updated?
Thanks

Hi,
Installing it from windows is fine. It really does not matter if the
driver gets installed infact it will not because it uses autoexic.bat
and xp does not use this to load tsr programs.
You just need to make sure the files are on your drive so you can update
the fermware. See your users guide for the dectalk express for
directions on how to do this.

Hi,
I need to revisit this topic.
the firmware file is an .exe one, not compressed. are you suggesting that
one should put the exe file on a floppy execute it onto that floppy then
install the files onto your drive bypassing the updating of autoexec etc?
then go into the directory and run the firmware from there?
can this be done entirely without speech? I would think so, since all
other firmware upgrades could.
I am asking as i have unpacked the .exe file onto a floppy, but am not
getting the files to install for some reason.
I am not upgrading the dtexp directory, but starting from scratch. Might
this be the problem?
Thanks,
Karen

Hi,
Its probably on the 1996 version that I am also using which does not read out the version when switched on. However mine works fine under Speakup. As I said have loaded the latest version on it, which is from Force computers, however I don't like it as much as the original classic version from 1996, even though it is around 10 years old now.
Andrew.
