triple talk internal/external

Hi,

I've been of the speakup list for a while and with all the problems of windows xp and microsoft it is time to take another look at linux.  I have not used speakup since version x.7 or x.9 and am sure there have been 
improvements.  I'm wondering if speakup will work with the internal triple talk wich is the same as a double talk pc but uses a pci slot.  Also would it work with the external triple talk wich has an usb and serial 
connection.

It is my understanding that these are the same as a double talk, just updated to use pci and usb.

Also I'm wondering what would be the best flavor of linux to install and try out that is the easiest to install with speakup

I don't want to partision my hard drive at this point if I don't have to as I'd like to see if this is something I'm going to want to keep learning/using.  So if I can install on a win 98 se system or windows me system, that 
would be great.
The systems I want to use it on are
dell inspiron 7500 with external double talk lt
desk top system with triple talk internal.

Ok, firstly about the trippletalk. The manufacturers will not give the
specifications unless someone signs a non disclosure agreement, which isn't
possible in the opensource world. however, maybe if kirk got his hands on
one i'm sure he could figure out how to get one to work. as for your other
query, there is zipspeak. i have taken over development of zipspeak, but
have not been able to upload to the internet because i'm stuck on a 56 k
modem for another 4 weeks. after this it'll be on the net. however, maybe as
a one off i can mail you the cd? zipspeak will work if you unzip it to a dos
or win9x partition.
this'll work with the doubletalk lt.

I can't beleive this company would require a non disclosure agreement as the blind comunity just has such good access to everyting and no road blocks to deal with.  I guess if I would of known this I would not be 
quite so keen on buying products from them.  I think I will write them a letter asking why.  Was it hard to get the double talk specs?

no, it was really easy to get the doubletalk specs, they just put the
detailsin the manual and are willing to help any developer.

So what can we all do as linux via speakup or whatever users, write them and ask them to release the specs?  If so, lets all send them a letter and request that they think about making this available.  It is not like it 
will loose them money or could it?

Better to write and inform them that while you would consider purchasing
their product, you won't unless/until their release their specs so that
a drive could be written for Speakup.

Now I can't try this with Artic now can I about the 215 internal Card huh!
as they don't sell it anymore but would sure love to use this in a linux
box to free-up the serial port for an external modem.

Sorry, the Artic 210/215 have no brights built-in so you would have to
have a tts driver.  That would make the Sounding Board and Accent
Messenger available also.  Anyone game?

Hi, you shouldn't have any problems with the Double Talk LT.
As far  as Linux Zip Speak is probably the way to go here.
Mandrake can be installed to a fat 32 partition, but takes lots of help from
someone sighted to get going with speech.
Although, Mandrake has a lot of nice features you don't see everywhere else,
but the accessability angle is a pain.
Zip Speak can be unzipped right onto the hard drive, edit a couple of files,
and run loadlin, and you should be well on your way to go.

I just had an idea and wondered if its doable.
What if the FSF signed all those non-disclosure agreements? Then we could have gpl Linux drivers, right or not?

Nope. The FSF just came up with the license...they would still be
bound by the terms of the NDA, and they don't release all GPL
software. (Besides, rms says he'll never sign a NDA. Good amn, that
rms.) Sorry, it wouldn't work that way.

The problem is that if the driver is gpl, then said driver would violate
any non-disclosure. If you release source code, then you reveal the
interface. It would be possible to release a driver avaialable for free
download. But you couldn't release the source code and thus not use the
gpl.
