Excellent! that's what I need to see. Thanks to Tom on the bit about
reconfiguring and demons, I always wondered what the --reconfigure option
of dpkg did. Now that this hopefully works, what do I do about the no
aliases error mutt gives me? That error happens after I try to type in an
address on the to line and i see it again when I hit tab. I'm assuming
here that you tab from to: to cc: to subject and so forth.

Hi guys,
I have a symbolic link in my home directory to a directory about 4 levels up
and four levels into a totally different branch....and when I login via ftp,
I don't see the symbolic link...how can I?
Take care,
Sina

Ah now I see when you hit tab after entering the address mutt is trying
to complete an alias that doesn't exist. To get to the subject prompt
just hit enter after typing the address. You might want to look at the
manual you get by pressing f1 in mutt as it tells you about a huge
number of options that can make using mutt much more pleasant as well as
everything else you wanted to know. You can search the manual with /text
where text is the thing you want to search for.

Hi,
There are two things you want to check. First, check if the ftp server
software you are using has a hide symbolic links option. Several do, and
this would inhibit the link from being shown. Second, and probably more
likely, does the ftp server chroot you in to your home directory? If
so, the link wouldn't be shown because it wouldn't work even if it was.

Are you asking why the server performs the chroot, or are you asking why
symbolic links don't work? If you want to know why the chroot is
performed, it is a security feature. It reduces the chance that a
compromized ftp server will allow people to do major damage because
people who get in don't have access to the entire system. As to why
symbolic links don't work, this would be because a chroot locks you in
to a directory. If the symbolic link points outside of it, then the
system wouldn't allow you to change to that directory because it is not
within the chroot.
