Hello,
I'm running speakup-1.5 and tried that idea of killing speakup with the
prtscrn key before entering emacspeak. Well, it doesn't work as advertised
on my box. I think speakup still has control of the serial port, so
emacspeak complains with a "process speaker not running" message.
In the past, I recall receiving advice to create a separate lilo entry
witout speakup if you want to run emacspeak.
Perhaps things are different with speakup-2.0.

you need to modify the various tcl scripts/speech servers to reflect the
fact you're using /dev/synth to interface with the synth of choice.
as for the serial port, I ain't played much with that side of things, so
I can't offer anything up in that reguard.

While we're on the subject of emacs, are there any practical tutorials on
tape, CD or MP3 format out there? I know that the man pages and info are
available, but I would love to get a real handle on emacs with some training
exercises that illustrate at least the basic use of it. It sounds like an
environment that does just about anything you want to do once you understand
the system.
Thanks

Emacs has it's own tutorial, just run control-h t and the tutorial
will talk you through the basics.

Yes, I saw that message on the Emacspeak list; however, I tried that
particular CD on three or four different systems, all with different
hardware configurations, and it didn't work on any of them. I know that
a few people have had success with it though, and from what I gathered,
the program simply boots to emacspeak and has speech.
Hope this helps,
Sina

Hi. I think you are talking about the oralux CD. There is also a
Knoppix CD on the speakup sight. It doesn't have emacspeak, but it has
speakup in the kernel.

Aha, you are correct...i apologize. I thought it used noppix, but I seem
to be mistaken. Is the noppix CD any better, and is it self voicing?
Thanks,

O, this sounds more like oralux, or something. I was certainly able to get
it to work, but i was in trouble once I saw that the emacs commands are
completely different from just the regular bash shell console commands.
Chris.

There is a speakup-enabled Knoppix CD on the Speakup site.

slow down,
What distro are you using? if it is fedora, you don't need to download
knopix, you can use the first disk of your install set, and tell it to start
up in a repair mode

I managed somehow to boot knoppix and got adriane talking once. I don't
remember exactly what I did to make that happen. Has anyone here got the
