installing Slackware or debian via telnet?

Hi all

I need to install Linux  on a computer to act as a server.  
Unfortunately, the system is without serial ports and sighted  
assistance is not, repeat not, available. I've tried installing  
fedora core 4 via telnet, but the NIC on this system which has an  
nVidia NForce chipset is not one of the drivers loaded when doing a  
telnet install. Is there any way to install either slackware or  
debian via telnet?

Nope.
Gentoo may work.
Slackware or Debian don't support network based installs.

Hi
Yes, Gentoo could be installed that way, but I find compiling just  
about everything from source to be rather annoying. Maybe I can get a  
telnet server onto the slackware initrd.

You might try using the trml live cd. It supports both software speech
from the live cd and starting up an ssh server with boot parameters.
Once you have the live cd up and running you can then bootstrap a debian
install on the hard drive. I'm not sure about installing grml to the hd
though because then AFAICT its not a straight upgrade path to a debian
system. If you absolutely need telnet rather than ssh I think you can
start the telnet service from the boot prompt as well, but I don't know
how off hand.

I will agree with Tom here.  I usually start with a knoppix or grml
disk to get a system up and then something I'm fond of doing is create
partitions and rsync the data from another box providing you have
network access.  I have install dozens of systems using this scenario
and it works quite well.  You just need to remember to use the
--exclude flag of rsync for things like /proc and directory structures
which are mounted on the machine you are rsync'ing from.  You also
need to remember to mount the root partition and run lilo with the -r
flag before rebooting.  I'm not sure about that flag though, I always
have to look it up before I do it.

GRML is a great solution. I just installed Debian this way, since
debootstrap is included on the cd. It does work, and me being a newbie
to deiban (atleast the current one;been using arch for a while), I was
able to get it up and running.

I only wish there was a way to use the Debian installer over telnet or
ssh.  There are a lot of things the Debian installer configures when you
answer those questions.  Unless the Debian people have updated it,
debootstrap doesn't give you a preliminary fstab and interfaces file
among many other things.  Those files then have to be created from
scratch, which makes the installation take much longer.  I prefer
editing an existing file over creating it from scratch.  Just my
personal preference.

Boot with 'grml swspeak' and run 'speechd-up' when sitting at the
prompt (grml has finished booting then).
