more about Bill White's Problem
Hi everyone. When Bill and I were telling about his mail time out problem
we forgot to mention that he is using a dial up connection. He says that
if the problem would be solved with broad band he would consider that but
he isn't even sure how he would configure his mail program for that.

love,

>>VoiceSignal Provides First Listen of VSpeak(TM) an Entirely New
>>Technology Approach for Embedded Speech Synthesis for Mobile Phones

>>WOBURN, Mass., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/--VoiceSignal, the leading provider
>>of speech solutions for mobile devices, today provided the first listen
>>of its top secret speech synthesis research project, which will be
>>called VSpeak(TM) when it hits the market in mobile phones later this
>>year. VoiceSignal's solutions previously contained a speech synthesis
>>engine for speaking names, numbers and menu items; however VSpeak(TM) is
>>a full text-to-speech (TTS) application that can read E-Mail, text
>>messages, web pages or any other text.

>>What makes VSpeak remarkable is that the technology consumes only 300KB
>>of memory in a mobile phone and has the sound quality and intelligibility
>>of systems requiring more than 20MB. VSpeak is a major step forward for
>>the mobile phone industry because for the first time a high quality TTS
>>system for reading text messages and other content can be deployed in the
>>memory constraints of entry level and mid-tier devices, rather than the
>>highest end smartphones. Including TTS in mobile phones allows users to
>>listen to incoming text messages or other text without looking at the
>>device. When matched with a bluetooth headset an entirely new eyes free
>>interface solution is
>>possible.

>>The research project that lead to VSpeak has been going on in "stealth
>>mode" at VoiceSignal for the last year. The aim of the project was to
>>revolutionize TTS for mobile devices by creating a product for mass market
>>phones that sounded natural and was compact enough to be deployed in the
>>entry level segment. The underlying technology for VSpeak remains a
>>secret, but the results speak for themselves. VSpeak(TM) compliments
>>VoiceSignal's other product lines: VSuite and VoiceMode, enabling mobile
>>phone manufacturers to provide a complete speech interface solution to
>>look up or dial a contact, dial a number, address a text message, dictate
>>a text message or have a text message or other content read aloud.

>>VSpeak will be deployed in all classes of phones, from entry level
>>through Smartphones and will appear in over 20 languages throughout North
>>America, Europe and Asia later this year and into the first quarter of 2006.

Hi Scott!

Been seeing your messages on the bookport list. I can't help noticing that
the most sensible people on that list seem to be hams. Of course, this
doesn't surprise me. But I digress. I'm thinking you might be able to help
me. I now live in New Zealand, where ham help is pretty sparse. I've gotten
my old Kantronix KPC3 out of mothballs and sent over from the U.S. I'd like
to get it going using a Braille lite 40 as a terminal. Have you ever done
such a thing? The serial cable is in good condition, so I don't think
there's a problem there.

Folks,

If anyone out there is using Exim and authenticating their smtp
connections like as Verizon's DSL service requires, I'd like to chat
with you. I had considered going with them, but couldn't get Exim
working in this manner, but for now I don't have to use that facility,
but it has me rather curious. I tried reading the docs and following the
examples, but couldn't get it working. It requires you use your name and
password.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I all,
I am working on the festival packages, and I had a question for those of
you using Slackware. Should I include the mbrola voices? The reason I
ask is because these are not GPL. I can either include them, not include
them, or distribute them as a seperate package. What is everyone's
opinion on this?

speakup and cedpstral
I realize that speakup and speech-dispatcher are two different programs,
but
they have to work together, don't they? I don't think you can use cepstral
with speakup and without Speech dispatcher. But I imagine you do need to
know which program's issues you are dealing with.
will look further at the speech Dispatcher documentation and info.
Have debuging on so will be looking at that.
Thanks.

Hi all,

New Librarian of Congress Ruling Gains Access to eBooks for People With
Visual Impairments WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 --

The Librarian of Congress issued a ruling supporting the right of people who
are blind or partially sighted to gain full access to electronic books
(eBooks). The ruling provides an exemption to the 1998 Digital Millennium
Copyright Act (DMCA), making it legal to circumvent any encrypted or
protected features that render the text inaccessible for the specialized
computer technologies used by people who are visually impaired to read
electronic text.
"This ruling upholds the fundamental right to read for all people," said
Carl Augusto, President of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB).
"The emerging electronic book technologies have the potential to make
published information more accessible and usable to people with visual
impairments. By removing barriers to utilizing eBooks, the Library ensured
all people can continue to enjoy the benefits of progress."

This ruling is the result of a concerted advocacy effort by AFB involving
testimony and evidence to show that approximately 50 percent of currently
published eBooks are inaccessible for people who are blind or partially
sighted.

"This is a major victory, but there is more work to do,"
continued Augusto. "AFB will continue to work with Congress, the Librarian
and publishers to ensure future titles are fully accessible for people with
visual impairments." DMCA, which became U.S. law in 1998, makes it a felony
to develop or use technology to get around security provisions of various
classes of intellectual property including software, ebooks, DVD movies and
audio, among others.

The Librarian's ruling provides an exemption for: "Literary works
distributed in eBook format when all existing eBook editions of the work
(including digital text editions made available by authorized entities)
contain access controls that prevent the enabling of the eBook's read-aloud
function and the enabling of screen readers to render the text into a
specialized format." Additional information about the DMCA and on this
ruling, including copies of all testimony, can be found on line at,
http://www.copyright.gov/1201/.

I am getting closer to installing RedHat.
I have downloaded the 8.0 ISO's and made CD images.
But since I ran F Disk, without setting any partitions, neither CMOS or
windows recognizes the 8 GB hard drive.
I tried running FIPS, but it says that it can only partition a DOS drive.
* Will Linux recognize this drive when I begin to install Linux, and will it
format & partition the drive?

Hi,
Where do you find the kernel source rpms for redhat 7.1? I tried
kernel-2.4.3-12.src.rpm
But it put files in
/usr/src/redhat/sources
But nothing in /usr/src/linux-2.4 where it is "supposed" to be. What
file(s) should I be installing?

While i'm writing, I have another general linux question... Module
parameters, where do they go? modules.conf??? There are entries like:
alias eth0 eepro100
Which is the right module, can I modify that line like:
alias eth0 epro100 set_speed_mode=4
where set_speed_mode=4 is the parameter (from the docs), would this load
that module with that parameter set? I have tried man pages, etc but it's
all clear as mud right now.

Gang,

I've downloaded the redhat 7.1 boot disk from
ftp://speakup.octothorp.org/pub/redhat-7.1/d1/images/
Whilst using this disk to install from a CDROM, I can navigate using the num
pad until I skip the keyboard selection, after which the num pad does not
respond. Is there any way around this?

Kind regards

Mo.
