Hi Folks,
A friend in the local LUG burned me a CD of GRML. I gave it a try.
Typed grml swspeak, at what I thought was the right moment. No sound.
Waited a while-- about five minutes. Typed grml swspeak, again.
Presto! It talked just fine, but way too loud. Blew me right out of
my chair! The speakUp docs say:
spk key_1 = vol_dec
spk key_2 = vol_inc
I tried this, though had little hope; didn't work in Oralux. Didn't
work here either. The numbers went up and down, but the volume stayed
way too loud. Anybody know a fix for this? Thanks.
Jim

Hi,
Yes, do this:
man amixer
That worked fine for me once I figured out the controls. You could also
turn down your speakers.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the suggestions. The man pages might have been usefull if
I understood what I was reading. Did I mention, I'm a relitive
newbie? I checked the info files on amixer, and they looked like the
man pages. I don't have a set of speakers with volume controls. I
plugged in a headset, and let it hang around my neck.
Instead of filling up this list with off topic questions, I'll get a
local LUG member to take a look at this. Otherwise, I can always pay
the LUG member I paid to get this Oralux system in the first place.
Unfortunatly, one way to cure computer ills is to throw money at them.
Anyway, again thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,
Sorry if I seemed unhelpful, but each sound card is different. I had a
similar problem but for me it was too quiet. I tried entering the
amixer command that I found with Google but it didn't work. I had to
read the man page and experiment until it worked. You can try these two
commands though:
amixer set Master playback 25,25
alsamixer
The later is supposed to be interactive but it didn't do much for me.
No guarantees on the former but that eventually worked for me.

I don't have the system infront of me that has oralux
with speakup installed, but I did have the exact same problem.
The system in question has both the amixer alsa-based audio
mixer plus the older oss-based aumix applications on it. I was
able to change volume with aumix.
The configuration for your kernel does allow for the oss
API as well as the recommended alsa modules so you may have
aunix and that should change your volume.

Well I know, but that doesn't really help a lot when I was asking about an
accessible version.
Ok I'll try again then...

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. Your message has what exactly to do
with the subject line? You could at least bother to change the subject
first for people trying to follow the original thread. I could point
you to the Orca keyboard commands, but instead I'll make you look on
your own since you couldn't bother to use a meaningful subject line.
I'm sure others will tell you where to look anyway. Please take a few
seconds to change the subject next time.

Hi,
Yes. I installed it to my hard disk in its own partition. I'm
reasonably happy with it, but I'm still having problems with X. If you
run grml2hd to install, do "aptitude update" and "aptitude upgrade
grml2hd" first. You might want sighted help for the install because
Speakup doesn't always tell you what the default choice is, even with
cursor tracking. I kep hearing "OK" even though there was a big list of
language choices on the screen. When I got to the language selection,
US English was the default but the cursor was on Austrian. I had
someone reading the screen so he told me that English was the default,
saving me the time of arrowing down through a bunch of choices only to
find that was the default to begin with. Especially be careful if
installing to hard disk as it will overwrite whatever partition you
select and again it doesn't always read correctly. I ran parted first
to resize and set up my partitions for the install but I don't know if
that's necessary or not. You'll also have to pick a boot loader, either
lilo or grub. Read the man pages to decide which is best. Also, you
asked about text games a while ago. It doesn't have any interactive
fiction interpreters that I found, but look at the bsdgames package.
That's probably what you want. Do "aptitude show bsdgames" and
"aptitude show nethack." Nethack is another very popular text game but
takes some getting used to in terms of navigating.

If speakup had a command that would search a list for an item with unique
attributes you would almost certainly have had the cursor on English
rather than Austrian. On Tue, 11 Mar 2008, Tony Baechler wrote:

Hi,
Does anyone have a copy of grml 2011.05 it seems they have removed gcc and

could you please let me no. I've tried looking on their site to no avail.
