Hi,
I'm working on a new instance of Debian Woody, and have noticed that I
appear to have no local loopback internet device. That is, any
attempt to reach 127.0.0.1 fails. A ping says "network is
unreachable". When I try reaching by hostname "debian", an attempt is
made to reach "127.0.0.1" (localhost). Even stranger is the fact that
I can access any other internet host. I've never seen a machine
without local loopback. How do I add this?
Any thoughts?
-Dave

Hi,
in /etc/network/interfaces you should have something like this
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
seb

Thanks! Will try.
Does Debian Woody usually come with local loopback not available, or
was it something I did in the install. When setting it up, Debian
didn't find my ethernet card. I had to build a new kernel with
support for it in-built.

Usually, so yes something you did. Although possibly only the route you
took through the install.

What sort of ethernet card is this?
I did a lot of Debian kernel rebuilding (don't you love those kernel
packaging tools) only to find everything I wanted worked fine with the
stock 2.4.18 kernel if you knew what to do.

Hi,
I did the Debian install with the floppy set from
"linux-speakup.org". I used the rescue, root, and 'drivers' disks.
In the "configure device drivers" part of the install, I tried adding
the modules for my 3comm Etherlink card. They wouldn't add. I
proceeded, anyway, just to get a working system. After that, I
discovered that I had no networking. I got a 2.4.20 kernel from
kernel.org, and built it, using the kernel packaging instructions
(Yes, I do like them). Now, I have networking to remote hosts, but
not local.
Now, I'm trying to find packages to fully enable my installation of
emacspeak, such as libxslt.
Thanks,
-Dave
