Hi all,
I posted this to the blinux-newbie@braille.uwo.ca list, but haven't seen any
traffic other than my message for several days now. I was hoping someone
here could help me.
After taking about a year's break I'm ready to dive into the beginnings of
linux again. This time I have a much better system to work with thankfully.
i have a HP 900 Mhz AMD system with 128 MB of RAM.
I've downloaded and installed the zipspeak distribution, and the dectlk
kernal and bootdisk image with speakup. I've used rawrite to make the boot
disk, since I'm using windows ME, I think that's the only way I'll be able
to boot the system since there is no DOS mode available to me to bnoot from.
Using the boot disk, at the beep I type:
mount root=/dev/hda1 rw
the system was unzipped to c:\linux, on my primary IDE drive. The floppy
reads and accesses for a few minutes and then everything stops with no
speach at all. I have my Dectalk express connected to Com1.
Can anyone help me fingure out what's wrong and how I can get things going?
Thanks so much!
-Matthew

Hi,
I tried that and still got the drive accessing for a bit and then a lockup
with no speech. Could the kernal boot image be bad or somehting?

did you try telling linux which sereal port your dectalk is running on?
I can't remember the command off hand but I'm sure someone here will know
it.
I have a doubletalk pc here so I didn't have to worry about that.

What I think could be happening to you is that the kernel
maybe looking for a parallel port zip drive.
Did you try just taking the kernel not the whole bootdisk image,
and booting it with loadlin?
You can create a startup dos disk, and stick loadlin on that.

The command would be something like this:
speakup_ser=serial port 0 being com1 and 1 being com 2.

Disregard that,
I didn't realize that you weren't getting any speech to begin with.

My Dectalk Express is on com1 which I was told was the default, but I tried
the command to specifiy this anyway and still get the same result. It has
to be somehting simple, I'm just to new at this to know where to go next.

HI Greg,
I'm using windows ME and have no DOS mode as a result. I did make a startup
disk, from the control panel and went to it's autoexec.bat file and added
the command to call the c:\linux\linux.bat file, but still no good.

greg. if you look in the zipspeak directory, somewhere in there is a whole
load of kernel images for zipspeak. all u need to do is download the 1
pertaining to you synth and rename it vmlinuz.speakup
that's what I did to start with. then I got the boot image for the same
synth and just typed mount root=/dev/xxx where xxx ipoints to the
partition or drive I had zipspeak installed on.
I hope this helps.

THat's just it, nothing happens. The disk goes for a while and then
everything stops and there is no speech. All I did was append the commands
to call the linux.bat filee to the autoexec.bat that was generated when the
startup disk routine was run from the control panel.
