Hi,
Is there any way of turning off key echo in speakup.
I have found the file /sys/accessibility/speakup/key_echo and I have
found that changing the 1 to 0 turns off the echo but is there any way
of making this the default?
I prefer typing without feedback but would quite like speech when using
the backspace or delete.
I usually turn down the volume on the synth but thought it would be good
to find the correct way of achieving this.
Many thanks
Keith

Hi,
You can use the speakupconf utility to save a configuration with key echo
turned off. The backspace echo still works as expected. After saving
this configuration, you can load it on startup from your distro's boot
scripts.
Best,
Zack.

Hi,
I am trying to turn off key echoe in speakup.
Using debian lenny.
I found a file in /sys/module/speakup called key_echoe which just
contained a 1. I used nano to edit and change this to 0 which did stop
key echoe. However, following a reboot, key echoe was back.
So, am I doing this wrong? How should I go about setting key echoe to
off?
Many thanks.

In your startup script, do echo 0 >
/sys/modules/whathever/the/path/key_echo
Put it in rc.local if you do not have another good place to put it.

Set it as a module parameter: speakup.key_echo = 0 on the Kernel Command
Line, or options speakup key_echo=0 somewhere in /etc/modprobe.d or
/etc/modutils, according to your modutils version.
