Dear,

Does anyone know any smartphone or a device with a similar size on
which it's possible to install Linux, or other desktop operating
system, and use it with a screen reader? Some weeks ago, I have read
that some guys had successfully ran Debian on a Sansung Galaxy Note
II. Would it be possible to use some assistive technology like Speakup
on it?

Actually, I'm thinking of getting a new smartphone, probably with
Android, but it would be cool if I could have a relatively small
device to carry with me, whether a phone or not, on which I could
accessibly use the same operating system I use regularly on my
desktop, and ocasionally install and experiment with other stuff on
it. Is there such a device on the market?

Many thanks,
Cleverson

I don't know of one that is currently available and working. Ubuntu
is supposed to be coming out with a mobile phone but whether it would
run speakup or not I couldn't say.

It is theoretically possible to compile and run speakup on any of the
Android phones. The problem is how to handle the imput. Without
being able to have reliable input, there's no way I can think of using
the screen review facilities of speakup. Also, the current Android is
totally graphical so it wouldn't give you much if any output if you
did compile and run espeakup. I'd be interested in pursuing the topic
and possibilities though if there were enough interest.

Hi,

The Raspberry VI list has announced that Speakup will be added to the
distribution used on the PI. But, you bring up an important point on
it's use on a tablet; how does one get input? I have only given it a
little thought and found keyboards that work with tablets. So the
possibility is there to run a Linux OS without the Android overlay. I am
an armchair Linux user, with a PI and a Atom unit so far, so I will be
following any development on this.

One company is trying to produce a commercial tablet with all open
source software, but they hit snags. I think it was called the Spark and
became the Vivaldi. The last I read, they were trying again and I am
still on their waiting list.

Are there any terminal software packages for android that could talk with
speakup from the commandline? I know they would have to be an actual
terminal and not a graphical terminal simulator and so am assuming that
none of the terminals or shells you can download for adroit would work,
but am just wondering if you have ever tried speakup with android with any
shell or other environment or software and gotten it to work at all? This
is defiantly something I would be interested in if it is possible.

Perhaps improving keymap configuration, so instead of writing down a
key stroke for a given speakup function, we would indicate a gesture
on a touch screen. Just a thought.

Thanks anyways.

A bluetooth keyboard would solve the input problem, but at the cost of
carrying an extra device, as would a braille display with braille input (but
this isn't the BRLTTY list so I won't pursue that possibility here, other than
to note that I'm tempted to buy such a display for just this purpose).

Apparently, some Linux distributions can be installed alongside Android on
certain devices, but I'm not familiar with the details.

Hello,

Isn't Android an overlay of Google code on Linux? So, Android is Linux,
but Google hides the Linux it operates on.

My reason to explore tablets is battery life and small size in a nice
package. It also pleases me to sidestep MS products. I am pretty green
in the Linux area, but tablets are running ARM processors, which is
different hardware and it may be that some Linux programs will need to
be adapted. There seems to be a lot of movement on the tablet platform
which can only be good for mobile blind users.

Speakup apparently can be placed in the ARM Linux OS, so if the
bluetooth keyboard can operate on the command line, this would be useful
indeed. The size of a tablet and keyboard is still smaller than a
netbook and the battery life of the tablet is much longer. The keyboard
battery life is unknown to me, but it seems that the keyboard isn't
using much power, but the bluetooth RF does and maybe a USB keyboard is
better for longer run time.

I am still struck by the lack of native speech output from all Linux OS
systems. It would be like leaving out video support. What does it
really take to embed native speech support? Yes, that was a rhetorical
question. Smile.
